Mad About Mid-Century Modern

^^lol

And the luminous library, wow!

Would also be interested in seeing the collections as Sally said.

Yeah, the Beinecke Rare Book Library is incredible.

garland: excellent link! I love the comment about the stairs being “IKEA Lack shelves nailed to the wall.”

Circuitrider, this was fantastic. I hope you’ll keep sharing your interests with us. Great thread.

We attended a dinner theater here last night:
http://www.redbubble.com/people/swedechristine/works/5768345-now-mcloones-was-howard-johnsons-asbury-park-nj</a></p>

This used to be the iconic Howard Johnson’s on the Asbury Park boardwalk. It was empty for years, but now has been repurposed as a restaurant with occasional shows. Truly remarkable building!

(show was fun, too. Written and starred in by Miami Steve Van Zandt’s slightly less famous but still well known younger brother, Billy Van Zandt).

There’s a burger place we drive by on occasion with a roof like that, but it’s not nearly as glamorous. ;)

One of my favorite sites for houses of this era is curbed.com. Here are two listings:

[Seattle home](http://curbed.com/archives/2014/12/18/vista-63-seattle-for-sale.php). Buit in 1963 for a Home Show - that’s what it says. The pictures are cool and the last few, a rendering and a closeup of the intercom, are priceless.

Great house in [Urbana, IL](http://curbed.com/archives/2014/12/17/replinger-glass-house-urbana-for-sale.php#more). Cheap too. Walls of glass, an internal courtyard, a real gem.

You’re so right about the intercom snapshot. It reminds me of an old hi-fi speaker. The furniture in that place alone must be worth a fortune!

Hi-fi, one speaker, that’s what we had in the house when I was growing up. The speaker wasn’t very big, but the rest of the piece of furniture was. Beautiful solid wood.

The terminal at McCarran International Airport is ready for takeoff.
http://takesunset.com/2010/04/mid-century-modern-las-vegas-exhibit/</a></p>

Those solid state intercoms never wear out. They may need a good cleaning every 20 years or so.

This[/url”>http://takesunset.com/2010/02/2348-cove-ave-in-silver-lake/]This is a nice renovation of a 1953 beauty.

About 3 years ago, we went to an estate sale near The Country Club, which is trés riche, to a house right of House & Gardens from 1960. It had been altered but most of it was truly lovely and I’m speaking in the most general sense instead of as a “lovely period example”. It’s been torn down. Of course.

SOS!! Orange County NY:

Haven’t been on this thread for a while.

I would KILL for the dining fixture in the Seattle house posted above. And the house in Urbana is gorgeous!

Here’s another favorite of mine…

The Orange County building is…interesting!

Funny that this thread should pop up. I am driving out to Palm Springs this weekend to check out this Wexsler with the hopes of buying… I have rented in this neighborhood before and it’s fab. Wish me luck.

Good luck…it looks gorgeous!

musica, fingers crossed!

Meanwhile… a local icon is reduced to a pile of metal:

There are a few issues with the house and though they could be rectified I don’t think the price is right. But checking in again this morning I find out that an offer has already been made and the sale is pending. Modernism week is coming up and the market always seems to heat up right about now.

@Lergnom, I really like the Urbana house (and the price, wow). But with all that glass, I wonder how it fares in the winter in such a cold climate. It LOOKs like it would be freezing in the winter.

For those of you who love mid-century modern, you may be interested to know about Ruth Adler Schnee: http://www.freep.com/story/entertainment/arts/2015/01/29/ruth-adler-schnee-kresge-cranbrook/22501543/ . She is 91 years young and just won the Kresge Emergent Artist prize. I love this article about her! She is a fixture around Cranbrook Academy of Art and Art Museum even after all these years … and some of her work was in the museum’s mid-century modern show last year.

Think the mid century craze will be around for awhile? Or a current “fad”? We have a 50’s home with much of the original in place. 15 years ago it would have been dated. Now it is dated but also “retro”. We’re thinking it may be the best time to sell?
