Magnesium Supplements?

Do you take them? For what I have read, most (cheaper) brands are magnesium oxide which is not easily absorbed. There are quite a few types, e.g. magnesium citrate, chloride, carbonate, malate etc., the list goes on…

For those who are taking magnesium supplements, what are your experience with them? Do you find them helpful?

@Hopeful820

i take a citrate in the morning and a malate at night. Malate is supposed to help with sleep. i have found that since supplementing with magnesium, my regularity has improved, certain skin problems have gone away, and my headaches have improved in terms of frequency and intensity. that’s just been my experience.

I had some deficiencies caused by undiagnosed gluten intolerance and Magnesium helped a lot. When I needed quick absorption I used Natural Calm. I can be found in most health food stores.

I started about 2 months ago with the oxide. I can tell you this…I am certainly “regular” now and my irregular heart rate seems to be improving. Pre magnesium my teeth hurt…sounds odd, but true. That daily pain suddenly disappeared.

I have have heard or have read the following:

1-it can interfere with proper absorption of thyroid meds so space it out a few hours

2-there has been research stating that those who often take magnesium for irregularity have a much higher risk of colon polyps. I don’t know if this is pill form or a format similar to Milk of Magnesia or if all ‘types’ are included. (most likely there has also been research stating the opposite)

3-I had a doctor once tell me that running a blood test for low magnesium does not always give an accurate picture because when your blood is low on magnesium, it pulls it from your bones. I assume there is a different test available.

I too am curious as to which type is best absorbed. My body is very sensitive to the fillers used in supplements so I am usually reluctant to try the unknown.

What is magnesium supposed to do? It’s never been suggested to me.

It helps with my calf and foot cramps.

A few weeks ago when the orthopedic doctor diagnosed my low back pain may be due to sacroiliac joint dysfunction, I was searching on the internet to understand more about it and came across some articles about magnesium supplements. It is supposed to help the body absorb calcium better, fight inflammation, etc.

I just had my MRI done 5 days ago and am due back to see doctor tomorrow to go over result, will ask him about magnesium supplements.

not sure that is science based or if it is good for you.

I’ll be seeing my endocrinologist in a month. I plan to ask her if it’s helpful for osteoporosis.

I have been struggling with TMJ (Jaw joint) pain for a year. Someone suggested magnesium and I started it a few weeks ago. I have noticed an improvement in my symptoms but I also started acupuncture at the same time so i don’t know what to attribute the improvement to. I am interested in more information if anyone has it in terms of what kind to take. The one I have is a combo of magnesium, Calcium and vitamin D. It is a HORSE sized pill and I have trouble getting it down. Any recommendations?

I eat a banana at breakfast time and make sure to eat almonds everyday.
