My son has received letters from magsformiles related to frequent flyer accounts that he has with 2 different airlines. It is true that his miles will expire soon, and he doesn’t have any travel plans prior to that time. He can get a magazine for 300-600 miles and that will extend the expiration date on the miles. Is this a decent offer or is there a better way not to lose all of the miles?

Depends on the airline. US airways has a miles mall, so I can go on Itunes through it and order a song, and that counts to keep the account active for another 18 months.

It’s been a couple of years, so things may have changed. But the last time my daughter was about to lose some miles I discovered that United Mileage Plus had a shopping link that takes you to many retailers. By purchasing something in her name through that link accessed via her mileage account, I was able to extend her miles for a few (?) more years. I just entered my own credit card in my name at the “payment” page. It didn’t matter what was purchased. I bought some stainless steel cleaner from Sears – had it held for pick up at the store to avoid a shipping charge. I recall that many retailers at provided miles for purchases accessed through the United Mileage Plus site – even Nordstrom, I think.

OK, I just checked. For United, the link is http://mponlinemall.com/go.aspx?UPID=NDODOGLDPFCEFAMGCDLCBCECIEACKDHGHBFDLCKCEDFEKBDCECODFAEHODFDHDIEJDNCLDNGOCJBJCKCKCEHMEJFFFOAGDCGJDBDJFFG

Dozens of retailers offering several miles per dollar spent ($4/mile at Nordstrom!)

MagsforMiles is great! I never accumulate enough miles for a free trip because I’m always looking for the best price regardless of airline, so I always redeem for magazines when I have miles available.

The exchange rate for magazines is much better than it is for a lot of the other redemption options too.

You can contribute a minimum of 1000 miles to charity on United to bump your timeframe another 18 months. It’s under “Other Ways to Redeem” as Charity Miles and has some excellent options.

I’ve also redeemed miles to extend magazine subscriptions - it is a good deal.
