Mail order wine for gift?

I need a Thank you gift for a wine drinker. I am not a wine drinker. Any suggestions of both online stores and specific bottles or gift sets that would cost around 100 dollars?
Or do you think it is a bad idea if I don’t know their tastes?
Thanks

I think it is too risky if you don’t know their tastes.

A gift certificate for a local store would be better if you don’t know what they like.

Shipping wine this time of year is not recommended unless you can arrange for cold-pack shipping. Wine can be ruined if it gets too hot.

Yes to all of the above. A gift certificate to Total Wine maybe a better deal because unless you are absolutely sure about the quality of the local store, it could be an overpriced miss. Just make sure Total Wine etc. would ship to their home state.

(IMO, Total Wine’s selection is great. We found wines that were really hard to locate elsewhere).

Agree that a gift certificate to a local wine store would be lovely (I imagine you can find the name of a nearby wine store online).

Or perhaps a decanter? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0000DC0XG/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1/154-0244010-4042024?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_r=ETX6JAJ6GW646YNG3128&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=1944687742&pf_rd_i=B000IOM9FM

Thanks everyone -very helpful

I agree a gift card for Total Wine or something similar would be best. My step-mother used to send a gift basket that included wine for Christmas and it was a huge PITA. Someone had to be home to sign as it had alcohol. Since it was a “gift” she did not tell us and we missed delivery attempts which always ended up taking 3-4 delivery attempts to resolve. My favorite gift from her ever was an Amazon gift card…I bought wine and books…

My mother used to call a wine store local to us and ask them to make up a mixed case. They always called to set up a convenient delivery time. Even though it wasn’t super fancy wine we always enjoyed it. I don’t think all wine drinkers are that picky. If it’s really something you won’t drink, you can have it out at a party or foist it on someone else. That said, I think a gift certificate would be fine. We don’t need a second decanter.

" I don’t think all wine drinkers are that picky."

As our past Wine Wars of CC has shown, there are plenty of picky wine drinkers…

Totally forgot about the 21+ signature required! That is a major PITA. And, to add insult to injury, not all such packages can be rerouted for pickup at the local UPS store or FedEx office.

Yeah -you guys have totally talked me out of it.
Thanks everyone

I should have added a smiley to that -It sounds like I am angry -I’m not.
