All;
Really minor, small, question here. Just curious though. Did y’all stop getting mailings once your S/D committed to UMd? Our D has kept getting stuff form other schools right thru May 1, From UMd pretty much nothing. Just thought they might send some of the congratulatory stuff/orientation stuff. Maybe she did get one mailing. The explanation I came up with is. a) state school b) clearly the kid is attending, so why spend lots of money after the committment. etc. etc. Anyone know of a different reason. U of Oregon was on her like white on rice, and kept it up throughout. UMd not so much. Again…no concerns just wondering what the philosophy is.

We were wondering the same thing. My son hasn’t gotten anything (other than confirmation that our deposit was received) since he committed. He was able to register for orientation, so we’re not worried - just thought it was strange.

The wooing ceased last year as soon as my daughter committed. Up until that time they showed her so much love. Once they get there though there is no shortage of tee shirts and other Terp freebies. It’s funny though because she still gets stuff from NYU asking her to rethink her decision even though she’s been a Terp for a year now!

My son never received as much “junk mail” from Maryland as he did other schools he was accepted to, and they were all publics. I’m actually glad UMD doesn’t send so much.

thanks all. good feedback. I know some of the privates even send stuff after committment to deal with “buyers remorse”. funny.

Enjoy the breather. A few mailings will start coming in August from outside sources - a sheet company, rug company, all the junk you can want…ha ha. But yes, Maryland doesn’t flood your mailbox, probably trying to be environmentally responsible because all of their new buildings are “green certified” so I imagine it’s all part of sustainability. There is a lot of info online and the parent newsletter is done online. You will get plenty of “paper” at the orientation and they do a great job of covering everything you need to know before you start. If there is any info you want before orientation, there’s always cc!

I never got anything from UMD even after I got in…I do wish they wined and dined me a bit, but all I ever received was an acceptance letter and a notice that I was chosen for EIP in honors. I explained it away with the state school thinking, but UNC Chapel Hill sent me a book written by one of their professors (after I committed to UMD). Oh well!

At orientation a few years ago, they gave out t-shirts and a drawstring bag if that helps to know. As terpmom said, throughout the year, there are tons of free t-shirts/freebies given out at games and events!

To me, Maryland is just being smart/financially responsible about it - saving on postage and waiting til you are on campus to give you stuff.

Once your sons and daughters are on campus, I think UMD will “wine and dine” them in a different sense. It has been my observation that the professors and TAs will get to “know” your students. I’m not sure if this is true at all schools, but I was impressed with the fact that they seemed to actually know who my son actually is! For example, a few weeks ago our family went down to UMD for Maryland Day. We stopped by the engineering exhibits to see our son, but couldn’t find him. I inquired to a student who was working an ECE booth if they by any chance knew my son and if they knew where we could find him. I was shocked when an adult next to him overheard me and told me where I could find him. As I looked closer, I recognized his name tag to be the chair of the department. Well, it’s amazing how quickly your brain can work- I instantly thought, he’s working here right alongside these students! He’s the chair of the department! I figured he doesn’t know who my son is. So I repeated my inquiry, “Do you know ___. We are his family and wanted to stop by to say hi.” Again, the man told me where was working. Then the woman working at the same booth asked if we were excited about him graduating. Again I was shocked! (I found out later that the woman works for External Relations in ECE.) They actually knew who our son was! So while UMD may not “wine and dine” the students with mail, our experience has been that they do an excellent job in getting to know the students in their department, which in the long run is much more valuable.

@davenmame that is really cool to hear. I’m guessing that your son has also worked very hard to make himself standout to the faculty. Even though it’s a large school, hard workers will get recognized. My daughter got a 100% on an exam first semester and she was walking through Van Munching one day and her professor stopped her to congratulate her. It was nice that he not only remembered her name but also was able to put the name with a face.
Congratulations on his upcoming graduation!

terpmom7, I’m glad your daughter had the same experience! It sounds like she is really excelling at UMD!!! That’s great to hear!!!

What awesome stories! Thank you for sharing! :)

Yup…I’d rather they get the attention by faculty, than another mailer. For sure! (though that may be a false choice). Still…good anecdotes.
