Mailing stock certificates

I need to mail some stock certificates to our broker. What is the best way to do this? I am rather nervous about it.

Certified Mail, return receipt requested. At least that is how ours were mailed.

THey must be sent securely and traceable. In the old days, this was by registered (not certified) mail, or perhaps hand delivered by courier (as within the same large city). I believe registered mail is still offered. By today’s standards, I would think that overnight services such as ups or fedex are reliable and insured to a point.

What does the broker suggest for delivery?

I assume you are too far for personal delivery? Delivery by hand to an affiliate office located nearby?

I cross posted with thumper, but certified is not how we sent securities in the olden days. You can get a return receipt with registered mail too.

What about Fed-ex with a signature?

Thanks all. I think I will check out registered mail tomorrow. Yes, this is way too far for personal delivery and there is not a local affiliate nearby.

Probably something like registered and insured for the amount of the indemnity bond needed to replace a lost certificate.

Sorry…I’m dating myself. I meant registered mail!

ucbalumnus- thanks for the links. I will insure them for the amount of the indemnity bond and photo copy them. Thanks to everyone!

I recently sent some to my FIL’s broker via UPS. UPS lost them. (Never registered picking them up from the lockbox.) Surprisingly, it turned out not to be a problem. I was sending them to have them held by the broker in my FIL’s account, instead of keeping the certificates in his safe deposit box, so they just arranged to have the certificates credited to the account. Took a few weeks, but it got done.
