Nope. You’ll be fine.
You’ll be fine. Rural New England is not like the rural West - there are still towns and places to stop. You’ll never go 50 miles without signs of (human) life like you do on western highways. You’ll never feel like you’re truly in the middle of nowhere (well, maybe in northern Maine, but you’re not going there).
Right! It only gets truly rural/desolate waaaay north of Bangor. Most of Southern Maine and Mid-Coastal Maine is a dreamy string of cuteness and beauty.
Well, not all of it, ha. There are stretches of Route One that aren’t particularly attractive. But the tourists stay there, so that’s a good thing. Go out to the Appalachian Trail if you want to see really pretty scenery and avoid the crowds.
HA true …that’s why I say MOST. The tourists are certainly a blessing and a curse.
My 2 cents… it’s a stunningly rugged coastline - the only area we’ve seen in the lower 48 that holds a candle to Maine’s coast is around The Olympic Peninsula/ San Juan Islands.
I highly recommend iExit app (free)
screenshot:
It can be used to price fuel, like GasBuddy.
But I like the ability too target exits far ahead that have good options for gas (hubby does not like all brands) and food…. in the same direction. Also shows lodging, shopping etc
Iexit app defaults to giving route choices near your location. But you can do national checks elsewhere. Example:
There will also be places to stop off route 2 if you go that way (which might make sense)
the outlets in Kittery.
I 90 is the Mass Pike. There are actually a lot of rest stops on that highway!
Yes. Unless you want to drive the whole way through small towns on two lane roads. Which might be good.
Depending on what time you are leaving Boston there are different options. You have got this!
If getting a car at the airport - use the nice clean bathrooms there at the rental car place and you should get to the New Hampshire visitors center rest area with no problem. If leaving between 4 and 6 pm you will hit traffic but also easier to pull out of any Dunkin’s parking lot with slow moving traffic -lol!
Sync your phone in your car before pulling out of the rental car garage. If you can not get reception, pull into the gas station right there at Logan by the rental cars and get your directions in or pay the daily rate for the navigation maps to be turned on in the car. Do not use Waze in Boston as it constantly resets to find the quickest route and has you getting off exits and getting back on.
The Kittery Trading Post is an easy landmark just into Maine with clean bathrooms and a chance to buy layers and souvenirs and the Maine Gazetteer (great map book with hikes, stops, historic markers, etc…) DeLorme Maine Atlas & Gazetteer | Kittery Trading Post
To get from Maine to Amherst you can also cut across New Hampshire and drop down and connect with Route 2 around Gardner or further west for a more scenic route. Still lots of bathrooms
Enjoy and bring layers.
Thanks everyone for talking me down. We get in around 3 pm but it’s on Saturday, so maybe no rush hour then? I figure there is always traffic in Boston though.
On a Saturday, it really shouldn’t take you all that long to get out of the city. From Logan to I-95N, you’re mostly going around the city, not through it.
Getting to Maine from Boston on a Saturday in summer can be a nightmare, but in March shouldn’t be too bad.
Yeah, Maine is not a high-traffic destination in March.
It’s the worst time of year IMO unless you happen to be in the mountains where there’s still snow–spring skiing is the best! There’s no snow on the ground right now in central Maine–just a lot of mud.
Late winter and Spring in general in Maine is horrible. Just a brown, muddy mess. That could continue well into June, however, in most years it starts to get nice out in mid May. Yes, every once in a while you catch a nice few days in April and early May, but it is the minority. Trees won’t start blooming until mid to late May.
If you don’t mind that, you will enjoy your time here. I was born and raised, so my tolerance for the months of November through June 1st is completely depleted at my age.
June 15 - Halloween = wonderful however.
Thank you! Is it pretty muddy right now?
