in general, how hard is it to maintain a high gpa at nyu as opposed to other schools like ivies or places like uchicago, northwestern, duke, georgetown?

i know some ivies have grade inflation (and others deflation, cornell D8) and i was wondering what the case was for nyu?

of course i realize - high gpa = lots of work. but beyond that personal effort, what is the general experience?

If you are in Stern, there is grade deflation, so it is really hard to maintain a high GPA therefore you have to study a lot and outperform the majority of your classmates. But it’s slightly easier if you are in CAS or any of the other schools within NYU. It all depends on how much you study and how well you stay on top of things.

alilies,

It does vary school by school and depending on the department. In CAS, some of the core MAP requirements really require you to push yourself a little more in classes like Texts and Ideas and Writing the Essay because generally they give only a certain percentage of As. So you have to work harder than your classmates or you have to meet your professor’s expectations better than other students in your class to get the A- or A.

Then I have heard of science classes, particularly Chemistry, where it is difficult to get the higher grades without working much harder than your classmates.

As mentioned above, Stern students do have to work hard to keep on top of the curve since only 15-20/25% of the students in many of their classes get the “As.”
