Major Admission Question

My S didn’t get admitted to Direct Freshman. I know that next opportunity will be at Early Admission after one year. But, what happens if a person unable to get admitted to an intended major ever after junior year? Is he/she automatically gets into major in the senior year? or is he/she has to choose different major in event of failure to get admission even after upper admission period?

You have to declare a major (and be accepted into the dept) by a certain # of credits (by 105)*.

If you don’t by that time, a hold is placed on your registration so you cannot register for classes. You will need to go in and see an adviser and make a plan to declare a major with the adviser before they will take the hold off.

*<a href=“Policies & Procedures - Office of the University Registrar”>Policies & Procedures - Office of the University Registrar;
“Hold on your student record. For instance, once a student has completed 105 credits at the University, the Office of the Registrar will place a Registration Hold until you have either declared a major area of study or you have requested a pre-major extension.”

What major does your kid want?

If it’s competitive and he does not get in, they are not just going to automatically admit him in his senior year.

Most majors will allow him to apply more than once/keep trying if he is not admitted, but he will need a backup major if he reaches 105 credits and has not yet been accepted into his major. Also, there is NO guarantee that he will eventually be accepted into the major if it is competitive. If the major your son is considering is competitive, he needs a backup plan in mind.

Thanks for your valuable input.
He is OOS student. His intended major is Bio-Engineering and it seems it is very competative. His HS GPA is 3.6 and SAT is 2240. I don’t think this stat doesn’t say anything on his success in getting into Bio_Eng. BTW, Due to this uncertainty about getting admitted into intended major, he is now considering attending UC, Davis or UC Santa Barbara inspite of his top choice school to attend is UW.

Here is some info about that major. [Apply to BS Bioengineering, Department of Bioengineering, University of Washington](http://depts.washington.edu/bioe/education/prospective/bs-bioe-apply.html) He should probably email the dept to ask about the exact statistics of getting in.
