I was admitted into L&S as an Undecided major. They said I can e-mail them and request my major to be changed to any on this list. Do I have to do it now or can I do it in August/September (when the uni opens for Fall)?

If I have to do it now, what do I do about a double major?

Also, if anyone knows what on Earth is the difference Physics B.S., B.A., and the one offered by the department of creative studies? I know that the creative one has more research in it, but what are the actual difference?

Thanks.

Undeclared:
I believe you can do it whenever you want, as the beginning years of L&S would mostly be GE’s. Some people are undecided until around their Junior years.

Double major:
Uhhh… Double major, I’m not as sure. I want to double major as well, so I plan to head to a counselor as soon as I can to talk about the feasibility of completing both in four years. I wouldn’t be surprised if they let you call them right now to talk about it.

L&S vs. Creative Studies:
Regarding the differences between L&S and Creative Studies, generally, creative studies is geared a little more toward people who - and I’m paraphrasing here - “don’t want to learn things that have already been established, but want to learn things that you establish.” The gist of the quote I received at a seminar for “High-Achieving Applicants” by the Head of the College of Creative Studies. From this, I extrapolate that - yes - it is a lot more research intensive, but I’m sure it is safe to assume at the smaller amount of people in the College of Creative Studies (I believe it was 300:1-2K, CS:L&S), the professors work closer with students regarding their education and research.

Physics B.S. v Physics B.A.:
Difference between Physics B.S. and Physics B.A.: “The standard program, which is in the College of Letters and Science (L&S), leads to either a BA or BS degree. The BS program is for those aiming for a career in physics, while the BA is a more flexible program allowing more courses from other areas.”

Upon further analysis of the different course schedules, a Physics B.A. takes less units than a Physics B.S.

Note that both of the above are 2009-2010 versions.

Thanks a ton! I plan on calling tomorrow.

I don’t think you can declare whenever you want. The letter of admission said “If you wish, you may change your major in Letters & Science now or after enrollment.”, but https://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/admitted/majorchanges.asp says "https://www.admissions.ucsb.edu/admitted/majorchanges.asp".

When I call I’ll find out. I think I’m leaning more towards the B.S., but the Creative does sound interesting.
