Major descisions

I’m a high school senior and I am having a very hard time deciding what I want to major in. I need to apply soon and I would like to be able to have a decision made. I’m thinking something in the health field but I’m not sure. I hear good and bad things about nursing, and as interesting as kinesiology/exercise science sounds, I’m not sure what I could do with a degree like that. I’m thinking about going to U of MN (if i get accepted) otherwise I really have no idea. HELP!

You probably don’t need to decide right away; at most colleges it is easy to change majors once enrolled. Check at U of MN to see if you need to apply to nursing directly as a frosh or it it would be straightforward to change your major to that later.

One thing I’d highly recommend is reading the book “What Color is Your Parachute?” which is the jobhunters bible. Any edition from the last 5-7 years is fine. What you want to read are the sections about “informational interviewing” which explains how to go about answering exactly the questions you raise about what it would be like to be a nurse, or to find out what you do with a Kines degree, and not with the 2nd or 3rd hand info you’re getting from friends in HS. This is something you can start doing in your community today to start making plans for your future, although it is unlikely you’ll find out enough to pick a major before college apps are due.

And when you’re in college be sure to visit the career center early and often to get advice, take workshops, etc.
