Without any warning, my major has been discontinued and I am left feeling like the rug has been pulled from under my feet. I was advised my first semester that the major was being phased out, but as long as I completed the core requirements by my senior year, I would not need to worry. As it turns out, that is not the case, even though it was declared and everything. I’ve already completed a sizable portion of the course load (that will not transfer well to any other major), which included two calculus classes I wouldn’t have subjected myself to suffer through otherwise. I had actually considered transferring, but decided against it, since the school I wanted to transfer to was phasing out the same program (I only went to this university for this specific major.) Of course, I already have an apartment contract for next year as well (the university is in a fairly small town, somewhere I wouldn’t live unless I was going to school there.) I’m strongly considering transferring, but it’s going to be a mess selling the apartment and applying to another university. Has anyone else had an experience like this? I’m very peeved that they can pull this kind of crap, but I don’t think there’s much I can do, other than withdraw and stop giving them my money.
I don’t know what school you’re at but I think you need to work out a solution with them. If they were phasing it out, where was your advisor in all of this? There is such a thing as interdisciplinary majors or majors that are self-created. You need to work with them to give you some options. Create a major. They just can’t leave you high and dry unless they want to refund some tuition.
I was on the teacher certification path, so I’m pretty sure transferring would be easier than creating a major. Luckily I was on a full-ride scholarship, so I haven’t been gyped of money, just time (although, if I transfer, all my credits should too.) I have a phone appointment coming up and I’m definitely going to bring up the fact that I already bought an apartment contract…because that certainly isn’t cheap (hoping I can sell it…but if I can’t I’m hoping they’d help me out…seeing as it’s their fault I don’t need it anymore.)
