<p>Hey, I’m really interested in UCLA’s West-East Medicine department since it’s a leader in performing arts medicine. I’m applying as an undergraduate freshmen, what major should I declare?</p>
<p>Apart from a summer course for undergraduates, the East-West Center doesn’t offer a program for undergraduates. If you are interested in integrative/complementary medicine and/or performing arts medicine, you should plan on preparing to enter one of the health professions. For your interests, these would include medicine, nursing, or physical therapy.
Most premed students major in biology or chemistry, but you can major in just about any arts & sciences or engineering field as long as you complete the usual premedical requirements (two semesters each of calculus, general chem, organic chem, general biology, general physics) as well as any additional requirements specific to UCLA’s medical school. For nursing or physical therapy, you should check the admission requirements of the particular schools that interest you, but most will major in a bioscience field.</p>
<p>Given your interests, if medical school is your goal, other majors to consider besides biology or chemistry would include anthropology, interdisciplinary East Asian Studies, an East Asian language (especially Chinese or Korean), psychology (including neuroscience), history (with a focus on East Asia, and History of Science), or even performing arts (though it probably would be better to do a performing art as an extracurricular activity). No matter what your major, you should consider coursework in Chinese, Korean, or perhaps, Japanese. Also, you should take some electives in a performing art (dance, music, etc.)</p>
<p>^Also, in some cases, a major in occupational therapy or in speech pathology/audiology might be appropriate, though I don’t think UCLA offers those fields at the undergrad level.</p>
