There are only 9 days left until Christmas, and if someone is still looking for a gift for you, why not suggest Major Pettigrews Last Stand? Thats our February CC Book Club selection and you have six long weeks of winter–and reading time–before our discussion begins!

From the New York Times review of Major Pettigrews Last Stand, by Helen Simonson: “Funny, barbed, delightfully winsome storytelling As with the polished work of Alexander McCall Smith, there is never a dull moment but never a discordant note either [the books] main characters are especially well drawn, and Ms. Simonson makes them as admirable as they are entertaining Its all about intelligence, heart, dignity and backbone. Major Pettigrews Last Stand has them all.”

This should be a fun read. Please join us! Discussion begins February 1st. Until then, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I do so appreciate this book thread- my IRL bookgroup tends to read tragic tales & while I think it is important to tell those stories- I am involved with tough enough stuff IRL that I really don’t need Downer Debby. ;)

( We are just finishing the Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong- )

It sounds great to read by the fire after a morning of snowshoeing!

Mary - I keep promising myself I am going to join the fun - but sometimes til the discussion has occurred I can’t remember what I have read! LOL.

I loved this book, so much fun, I will re-read and attend!

Thanks for bumping up the thread, psychmom. It’s a good opportunity to remind everyone that there is still plenty of time to read Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand and join us on February 1st!

Just finished it on New Year’s Day on my Kindle. I thought it was a nice gentle feel-good novel, and somehow very contemporarily “English”, haha whatever that means. I look forward to February when everyone’s read it and we can discuss away without spoilers.

This is just a reminder that discussion begins in two weeks, on February 1st. It is very easy to read this book in that amount of time, so if you haven’t picked it up yet, there is still plenty of time to do so!

I have been so out of touch - I am glad to have found this thread. I will download this to my Nook and commence reading tonight - it looks good!

Let’s see, today is Jan. 25, which means I have eight days to read (reread, actually) the book. No problem. Now if everyone around me will just leave me alone and let me read.

^^^ And just in case anyone notices that “eight days to read” stretches the amount of time I have left … well, I counted today and then after that I guess I can’t count. :o So … seven reading days til Feb. 1, counting today. (Truly grateful that SAT math no longer lurks around the corner, waiting to attack me.)
