Great book. There is a movie, too, starring Don Cheadle, which I thought was excellent. (Netflix has it.)

I’ll start a new thread for Water for Elephants. I don’t know which is more exciting, starting a new book or knowing that by the time we discuss it, there will be no more snow.

“A Lesson Before Dying” - sample just added to my Kindle. TY- Ignatius and Mary13

Ignatius- interesting about my suggestion of The Shanghai Girls. I never finished reading that one.Enjoyed what I had read but that was only 1/2 of the book, and makes me wonder why I suggested a book I did not complete. So, for the record, I did not finish that one.

Ignatius - I am beyond humbled that you have a SJCM reading list !!! Beyond humbled, actually shocked. Let me know if you enjoy Breakfast with Buddha, as a nice, little romp-a sweet book.

Also, Ignatious you mentioned -
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot
We’ve never chosen a nonfiction book before. (Paperback doesn’t come out til March 8. I don’t think that is necessarily a problem though.)

The person who suggested the Polio -An American Story to me , is now reading the Henrietta Lacks book…another title to add to my Kindle sample !!!

Mary13- No More Snow in early April, you say? - don’t count those chickens before they’re hatched Mary, especially after the 20.5 inches of record snow you just had in Chicago! Those April storms can be the worst!

^ That’s enough out of both of you. Just remember, the colder the climate, the longer the lifespan. Actually, I think that’s only true for clams, but doggone it, it should be true for humans!

About 65 pages into “Water for Elephants” on MY BRAND NEW NOOK! So far I really like it…I was a hesitater for so long. But I remembered to hilite some passages, etc…so I will be ready to discuss. Liking it so far…

^ Great! I’ll start a new thread. Discussion will begin April 1st, so you have plenty of time to read Water for Elephants at a leisurely pace. I have the book, but I am going to wait until March to start it so that all the details will be fresh in my mind.

Yes that’s what I’ll do as well. I ended up reading Major Pettigrew far too fast, so when discussion time came along all I had to go on were my annotations from Kindle ;)

I will follow as a lurker through the Water For Elephants discussion. I read it a while back, and would love to read all of your insights. I am sure I missed a lot!

^ I hope the discussion will bring back enough details for you to comment as well as lurk! We’ll do our best to make sure that the June selection, after Water for Elephants, is a book that neither you nor CBBBlinker has read.

I noticed that you purchased Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and that CBBBlinker hasn’t read it. Bookworm listed it as among her bookclub’s best choices, newccuser expressed interest, BUandBC82 hasn’t read it, I haven’t read it …

I know that titles have been picked in advance previously - at least the summer of '09. Maybe (???) if psychmom and SJCM and others haven’t read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - and are interested, we’ve got the June selection in hand (though June seems so far away). Anyway, I could be jumping the gun here and don’t mean to do so really … I just see the title coming up again and again - and I know the Kindle price is so low right now.

As the official CC Leader - express your opinion on the above thought. (And feel free to fuss if it sounds presumptuous on my part.)

psychmom, SJCM and others, have you read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet? If not, let’s line it up for June. If there is a consensus that this is a good choice, unread by all (or most) of us, then I’ll add a P.S. to the April thread, so that any interested parties can purchase the book ahead of time, at its current bargain price.

That’s fine with me! I’ll download them both to my kindle. I’m also going to wait until March to start reading Water for Elephants. I am definitely one who will lose much of what I want to add to the discussion if I finish the book too early.

Count me in. Haven’t read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
Just finished Water for Elephants yesterday, and will review before the discussion starts.

Psychmom-I would enjoy reading some of your book suggestions if you care to share. As others have stated, even if those books are not the “selection” I know many of us are reading from these lists.
New thread started - "What is Your Favorite Book of ALL TIME " -----interesting.

Count me in for “Hotel on the Corner …” I’ll buy it now in case the $5.00 Kindle price isn’t permanent. I saw it’s rated 4 stars on Amazon by readers, although the Publishers Weekly review is only so-so. (But, heck, what do they know?)

Kindle question- How do you know that $5.00 price isn’t permanent ? And, Kindle savvy folks please pass on other tidbits of info like that for those of us newbie Kindle-ites.

Thanks CBB- am spending so much more on books, any deals you find would be very appreciated.

Also, just a suggestion, as CBB pointed out that sometimes there are a variety of reviews about books, and if at least ONE of us have read the selection, it might be wise.
And, to repeat, how great it is to see the new folks, including those who shared their opinions at the beginning of this thread. Guess there is a growing number of lurkers, too ?

Actually, I don’t. It may well be the “one and only” price for “Hotel on the Corner …”

On Facebook, I “Liked” the Kindle page. Periodically a FB post will show up on my News Feed with an alert about a free Kindle book, and it will specify that it’s only free until a certain date. Several months ago I got “The Invisible Bridge” free.

[Free ebooks, bargain books and book reviews for the Amazon Kindle, nook, kobo, Sony and other ereaders from Books on The Knob](http://blog.booksontheknob.org/) is a good website to have on your RSS feed if you would like regular updates on free or discounted Kindle books and games.
