Majoring in American sign language??

I have always had an interest in majoring in asl. I previously thought I would major in journalism but many people on here said that it’s best to go to undergrad school for something other than journalism so I thought about asl. however I don’t see how asl could help me if I wanted to go to graduate school for journalism…

maybe I can major in asl and minor in journalism? Or double major?

Absolutely.

Your major isn’t that important for journalism grad school but it can inform your work. You could focus on stories related to disability, American sub-cultures. Journalists tend to have a niche be it business, international stories or sports. Work with what you know.

More important than a journalism major or minor is actually producing work that develops your skills, stretches your knowledge of journalism and gives you a portfolio of stories, articles and/or tv or film work to help get into grad school and your first job. Join clubs and campus newspapers, magazines and tv or radio stations and get to work. Try to get articles published in local newspapers or well known news or current affairs websites. Be pushy and network!
