So now’s the time to decide my major and unfortunately it’s probably going to be a hastily-made decision. The problem I’m encountering is that I know very little about the majors I’m considering. I’m good at the curriculum, so that’s a plus, but I don’t feel like the little brochures they give out at conferences are enough information for me. Stuff on the internet seems to give the exact same information as well, so…

How do you really learn about a major? Just take the plunge? I’ve spent my last two years at community college unable to make a decision, but sadly now is the time. Sorry for any typos. Swype is awesome but not perfect. :)

What subjects interest you the most? What can you do with the major that you choose? Do you want to pursue a science or non-science based degree? Those are some good guiding questions that I can think of.

Talk to people at your school. Just other undergrads. You’ll get not only a better grasp of what the majors are but how the focus of those majors differ at your school.

In my opinion, it’s hard to really understand what a major is like unless you just do it. Are there introductory classes that you could take in different majors? Even if you just audit classes at local universities or take an online class (like through coursera or something), that may be able to give you a better idea of what the major and the classes in it are like.

Other than that, you could try to speak to other students or other professionals in the fields you are interested in about their college majors. Sometimes reading course descriptions help, and if you can get a hold of the syllabi of interesting classes, then you might be able to get a better idea of what the class is like and whether it interests you or not. Students who are majoring in something your interested in might be able to give you a good description of what the major is like, and they might also be able to give you some old syllabi or notes that could help you get an idea of what they really teach in that major.
