Majors & Housing

Hey guys, I’m currently a Senior/Class of 2008 student.

My (in the long run) goals: To get into med school, become a doctor

My (right now) goals: get into UT with the major I want

I want to apply to the UT School of Communications, majoring in
Radio-TV-Film.

Haha. Whenever I tell people that, they’re like “And you want to become a doctor?”

It’s possible…right? To major in something completely non-science related and still be accepted in Med. School? I just have to take the required pre-med courses, right? (oh, and of course the MCATS, and interviewing and stuff!)

What my main question is:

**Is the School of Communicatons hard to get into? Esp. if I want to major in Radio-TV-Film? **

The 2nd school and major that I chose was:

** Liberal Arts, Ethnic: Asian American studies. **

I looked at the Anthropology major and was really interested in what they had to offer, but I’m choosing Asian American studies because it too offers courses in Anthropology allthe while focusing on Asian-American studies.

** Is it hard to get that major?**

I’m top 11% (drats! missed it by 6 people!! :p, hopefully will be top 10% by the end of this semester), I’m retaking my SATS and plan to score 1950+, I have Medical Intership experience (HST, P.A.C.E Internship program with doctor), and a lot of volunteer hours. GPA is currently 4.2/5 (took a lot of extra curricular activities that only were 4’s, otherwise all my classes are AP and for the majority of them, I received A’s.) I’ve taken Journalism, and am currently Sports editor for my school’s yearbook. I also am President of H.O.S.A, a member of NHS, and a mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sister program.

I know my stats aren’t WOWOW great, that’s why I’m not applying to Business or any of the Science majors. I enjoy working with people a lot, so that’s why i’m choosing a Communications major.

Thank you!

Also, side question: **Which dorms are the best for entering freshmen? I’ve heard quite a few scary stories about Jester, and plan to apply for housing the minute it’s out (I think for this year, Oct 1, 6am) **

You should get into any major you want, other then business.

I thought Jester was horrible horrible, but it really isn’t all that bad. I got San Jac(my first choice) because I did apply the first day, but I don’t think it would have been so bad to stay at Jester, but as far as location and room quality goes San Jacinto is the best dorm. Duren is just as good for room size/quality as San Jac but it is way on the other side of campus, away from Gregory and Jester(most freshman live there). Duren and San Jac aren’t very social dorms at all, so if you want to be social, Jester is great.

To be perfectly honest, your going to get a whole hell of a lot more out of a science/medical related major then any crap radio/tv or asian studies major. It may be interesting, but unless your a test taking master(the fact you haven’t scored a 1950 yet doesn’t lead that on, no offense) you should take all the preparation you can get.

Ah, no problem. I know i’m not so great at test-taking.

But your comment really changed my perspective.

I was being hasty in my major decisions, and after talking with my parents (who also agreed that RTF and Asian American studies were not reasonable majors to pursue) I’m trying to rethink what to do.

Would getting a Biology/Physics/Chem major at UT be difficult? One of the reasons I did not automatically apply for these majors was because I though it would be difficult to get into (i kind of assumed it was on equal footing as getting a Business major).

I’m still very naive on the subject of college, having no one else to help me with such things (my couns. are idiots, no offense to them, or anything). So any help would be greatly appreciated?

Restated questions:

I’m looking at my acceptance options; is a Science major hard to get into?

Question about Majors/Minors: If a Science major is attainable for me, what can I minor in? Anything? What about business…even though it is [extremely] difficult to major in, would it be the same to minor in it?

What if I go in Undecided, what would happen then? How will I choose my major then?

If any of the questions I’m asking makes no sense, please correct me. I still am uncertain as to what exactly a major and a minor is!

thank you!!

ps. Yes, I’m a senior in High School. But if my questions lead you to think otherwise, then it just goes to show you how completely lost I am.

Ah, crap, it won’t let me edit, but…

one more teensy question. (:

If i wanted to apply for a Biology Major, can I do specific application to Biology (BS): Human Biology??

What exams would I need to take for this? Any SAT2’s?

Yeah nosoup is right in some ways, but its all about aptitude on the Mcats. If you feel like you can do well on them without the physics/bio/chem major, then take whatever, but if not then it would better to go into one of those 3 or like biomedical engineering or something.

Science majors aren’t difficult to get into once you get into the school. If your in the school, transferring to other schools is not hard unless you are trying to transfer into McCombs. Being undecided is good and bad, it leaves your route pretty open, but it can be a waste of a semester if things don’t even out or if you decide early on in the semester, you could spend the whole rest of the sem in useless courses.

I don’t think there is a specific human biology major, I think its just all biology. Keep in mind that the biology major isn’t required for med school, so some people will be going in relatively clueless(ie non bio majors) and so I don’t see how the bio could be impossible in med school to begin with.

And really, if you want to do RTF or Asian American studies then eventually go into medicine, be sure, because if you end up being like " I don’t want to be a doctor anymore", your Junior year, you could end up in between a rock and a hard place with a RTF degree.

I truly want to be a doctor. With out a doubt, truly want to be one.

But wanting and becoming are two different things, and I’m the paranoid type that always wants second options.

That’s why I need a major that can support me financially in the future, in case my dreams don’t work out. (haha. sound’s so depressing).

My parents want me to major in business, but seriously, let’s be realistc: McCombs is out of question.

A science major is not:

Let’s say I major in Bio, can I minor in Business?

** I can still take all the classes required for a business major, right? Even though I’m not going to be majoring in it?**

I want to become a doctor not just for the money, but because it truly is a passion of mine.

But if that doesn’t work out, at least I’ll have a good paying job, eh?

I apologize if my questions are so far out there. =D

What are some potential jobs for a Bio Major?

What are other majors (at UT) that have a favorable job/salary income?

As for preperation for the MCATS, I guess it’s enigmatic.

I got low SAT scores (low 1900’s), but high AP scores (5’s for USHIS/ENG/STAT/BIO).

So I really have no idea whether I need preparation or not. Damned if I do and Damned if I don’t. :p

Major question: If I apply for a Bio major at UT, will I need to take SAT2: Biology?

Thanks!! You guys have been a lot of help!

What are some potential jobs for a Bio Major?
Not much with a BS. Can’t really get anywhere with a BS now-a-days. You can certainly work as a Research Assistant for a medical school/university. But usually, Bio majors move on to graduate school and attain a PhD.

What are other majors (at UT) that have a favorable job/salary income?
Pharmacy, certainly, is a big/good one.
Nursing. RN -> FNP
Also, try PA (physician’s assistant). They do a little less than doctors do, but it doesn’t take as long either (rather than 4 years for med school + residency)
Optometry. Podiatry. Dentistry. Veterinary (harder to get into than med school).
A lot of possibilities out there! Find your passion!

Major question: If I apply for a Bio major at UT, will I need to take SAT2: Biology?
Not necessary. The only SAT II you’ll need is a Math one for placement in any major.

The CNS and CoLA are the easiest colleges to get into. It’s a lot easier to get in as a Bio major rather than a Business one for sure.
