MAJORS vs the DEPARTMENT- can someone please explain how it works?

Hi,

First of all, I’m about to finish sophomore year of high school and will be a junior in the fall. I’m interested in going to NYU but lack basic understanding of how college works in general so I’m going to sound like an idiot… please bear with me. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not positive what I want to do for a career, but I’d like to do something with writing or the performing arts. I’ve wanted to be a contemporary singer/songwriter for the past few years but am open to many careers in the area of the performing arts, as I’ve trained as a ballet dancer my whole life and am passionate about acting in and outside of school. However, I also love writing. So I was wondering, is it possible to attend NYU Tisch and the College of Arts and Sciences to get a major in Performing Arts and a minor in Creative Writing?

I know that it’s possible to attend both schools at the same time and I know that the Creative Writing minor is available at the school of Arts and Sciences. What is unclear to me is the majors you can get at Tisch, I can literally find no information anywhere. I know that they have the basic departments, like dance, acting, etc., but if you choose to go into those departments, is the title of that department your major? I’m so confused! Performance Studies and the idea of the department is exactly the type of thing I want to go into, but it seems like it’s not actually learning how to perform. I want to study performance, but I also want to study HOW to perform.

I really want to major in the Performing Arts as a whole so it’s possible to study everything that I like, but I don’t understand how I would do this with the specific departments and everything. Sorry if I sound really stupid… could someone just explain it to me? Thanks!
