Majors

Just wondering, what are some majors in L&S that are considered the most challenging?

Physics and math are known to be tough.

MCB’s in L&S as well. I don’t know if the material’s challenging, but the competition sure is fierce there.

I heard Rhetoric is tough.

I thought about Math, Physics, and MCB. Haven’t heard of Rhetoric. What are your opinions on Economics or Chemistry?

Computer Science? Astrophysics?

Particularly some of those that have been mentioned, and I would add Chinese, philosophy and chemistry.

Maybe rhetoric, in a philosophy/comparative literature sense. Its difficulty and to a good extent content are fairly similar to philosophy and what I imagine to be comparative literature (or film, or cultural anthropology at times), although I would say it’s somewhat less difficult than phil. I would say one difference is that it seems many of the people you read in rhetoric are difficult to read because they to want to be so, whereas in philosophy I think it’s because they’re trying to be clear and thorough, yet they’re dealing with difficult concepts; then again, they’re generally dealing with difficult concepts in rhetoric.

My vote is for CS. Not only is the material both esoteric and time-consuming even if you understand it, but the competition for spaces in the major ensures that the lower-division coursework inevitably devolves into a savage slugfest. You have to, sadly, fight for the best possible grade you can get because it might be the difference between getting into the major and not getting in. You can perform quite well in CS classes (i.e. a GPA of 3.3 or so in your lower-division coursework) and STILL end up not getting into the major.

Maybe. But not if the student already knows Chinese. The same principle applies to all other language majors.

The other CS needs to be added to the list - Cognitive Science.

Math, CS.

Dun dun dun!!!

rhetoric is tough?

Well, if you really want to grapple with the stuff you’re reading, yeah, it’s tough. You can easily spend a lifetime doing it, and you might not make any progress in understanding. However, getting As in rhetoric, as far as I know, is doable, and far easier than trying to understand what you’re reading at any depth.

Rhetoric isn’t easy, but it’s doable.

I thought Chemistry was in College of Chemistry, not L&S.

there is one in both l&s and CoC

Does no one have comments on the rigor of the Chemistry major in L&S?

What about the difficulty of Economics compared to the rest of the majors mentioned?
