ESSAYS
-I wrote one on my experience when volunteering in Africa
-Another one I wrote about my experience living around the world (i’ve lived in 6 countries on 3 continents) and how the difficulties affected me but made me a better person
Last but not least, my main essay will also probably be my hook as I’ll explain how I learned english in the 6th grade when i moved here but I overcame the difficulty to get an A in AP English.
I’ve had all these read by 3 english teachers and they have all told me they’re really good

RECS

great from one teacher, excellent for another

GRADES

the grades above are up until junior year. i’m taking 5 AP’s next year, and i’m pretty sure i’ll do very good on them. my counselor has also told me that if I get all A’s, I’ll mostly likely get into the top 5% maybe even higher. however, i’m probably applying ED to brown so how would i go about sending in these scores, which could significantly increase my GPA/rank?

THE SCHOOLS

-brown (top choice, probably apply ED)
-williams (second choice, i absolutely love this place, only reason it’s not my top choice is because of the drinking i’ve heard of)
-notre dame
-georgetown
-tufts
-emory
-vassar
-wesleyan
-rice
-u virginia
-columbia
-U North Carolina
-Duke

THE PLAN

-either towars doctor or international lawyer. for medicine, any good graduate school will do. as for a lawyer, i’d LOOOVEE to go to yale law!

thanks very much and i appreciate any input!!!

Your Scores and WGPA are impressive, and your ECs are pretty good. Your essays sound very good, and I think you’re right about your hook. Based on your information, I’d say:

brown - slight reach, but ED you have a pretty good chance
williams - slight reach
notre dame - match
georgetown - match
tufts - match
emory - reach-match
vassar - match
wesleyan - not really sure
rice - reach-match
u virginia - safe match
columbia - slight reach
U North Carolina - safe match
Duke - slight reach

That being said, I still think you will be accepted to a good number of these schools. Good luck with your admissions!

no no, yo soy de Asia, comrade. Pero vivi en Guatemala por unos 14 an~os (with the curly thing on top of the N, otherwise, it would mean another thing!, but my cpu can’t do it) por eso se hablar el espanol muy bien.

piensa positivamente. Eres de etnicidad hispana y tienes awesome stats. No creo que tendras problemas con BROWN ED.

Good luck man. You’ll do fine with Brown ED

oh guys, sorry i’m a girl, sorry if i seem “manly” lol. well thanks for the replies so far y es muy bueno que tenemos algunos latinos aqui!

well, here are my SAT scores:

World History- 4 (i retook this after getting a 2 sophomore year, i didnt study at all hehe)
US History- 5
English- 4
Human Geography- 5
Art History-5
Macroecon- 4
Govt.-5

This year expected:
Bio-5 (absolutely no problem it was really easy)
English IV- 4 (also very easy)

also, what are ways that i can turn a slight reach at duke, columbia, williams and brown ED?

I’m confused, though. Are you a junior? Because you just listed that you got a 2 soph year in WHAP, and if you got a 4 upon retake… doesn’t that make you a senior now? :P

I’m going to disagree with previous posters. Your quantitative stats (GPA + SAT scores + SAT II/AP scores) are fine, but not spectacular. I think you’ll have a shot because of your essays, because if you’re a semifinalist in these competitions I’m sure you write convincingly and you’ll be able to turn your life into a hook. (As it is I think the “learned English in middle school” thing is, unfortunately, common among many smart minorities.) Being a Latina will also help.

lackadaisy, no sorry i messed that up. i got a 2 on WH freshman year and the better score came sophomore year. my bad.

thanks for your honesty. a lot of people were telling me i’m in everything so then i came here to post it up because i was still skeptical so i appreciate truthfulness.

anything i can improve on over the summer for ED app?

-Volunteered at hospital 250+ hours
-Took a one week course at Brown about Medical affairs abroad
-Volunteered for one month in Africa building new schools, helped in surgery, etc.

excellent, since you’re planning for being a doctor.

You might consider some type of law intern, if possible (?)
It Might help…
you’re a pretty solid candidate.

kevster, about the law internship, i was trying to look for one of those but i’d only have time for one after senior year. on the college apps would i just say “planning on doing law internship over summer” or just say nothing at all?

i’d say just not put it,it’s just my opinion. Just reverse the case. If you were one of the admission officers, what would you think of a person wanting to major in Law saying “Planning on doing law intern over summer”? I’d say it’s pretty… ugh, can’t come up with the exact word… But you know. If I were you, I would just not put it.
