Making a college visit count.

What are the top questions to ask a career counselor when visiting a college?

We never visited with any career counselors, and you will be lucky if the career center is even mentioned on a tour. In fact, I have just been calling career centers at various colleges and talking with staff. I ask them about which companies recruit from their college and questions about internships, etc… You can find quite a lot of info on Linked In of all places. I discovered this because one college had a link to their profile on linked in. That site offers info such as percentage of students going into various professional fields, where they end up living, and what companies they work for. Probsbly the most useful thing I have found so far.

The most important thing is to sign in so there is a record that you visited the school. Most times you will be in a group meeting where there is no record kept of what you ask. If you have a one-on-one meeting then ask questions that relate to your particular interests, projected area of study, things on campus you want to get involved with etc. There is no one size fits all top question.
