Making COVID-19 Masks

HA! As if on cue! A neighbor with 3 young (under 10) boys heard about my masks and asked if I’d make some for her boys. By chance she had cotton sheets with super heroes on them and will wash them up and yes, I will make her boys super hero masks!

This was a different pattern that I liked, the small is a good size for smaller faced women. I just use two layers of cotton. The chin dart is nice and the front is on a fold other than the darts.

If folks are interested, here’s a link for making clear face shields using a piece of heavy clear plastic or acetone that is worn with glasses or sunglasses.

To make mine, I took apart a thick clear vinyl zippered bag that we were going to dispose of. It had enough plastic to make 4 shields. Clear report covers or any other stiff, heavy plastic would work for community use.

JoAnn’s had a ‘music legends’ line of fabric. Unfortunately, most is sold out online but some stores still have some. My brother wanted Grateful Dead dancing bears, but no luck. Wish I would have ordered online and paid the full price. I could have made a million with 2 yards. They had Rolling Stones, Woodstock, Grateful Dead, Kiss, and a few others.

My brother has to live with his tie dye, VW bugs, sports teams. Friends have had special requests (Broncos, purple tie dye, kittens) and are shocked that I always seem to have these. I did not have any Batman fabric that a friend asked me for. I told her to go buy a t-shirt.

The plastic face shields + cloth masks would seem to protect the wearer as well as others in the vicinity. These shields are very light and portable. If made with materials lying around your home, they’re also very low to no cost. In any case, making the shields saved me from spending $55 to $100+ buying a batch of face shields made by others.
