<p>Well, the good Mr. Reid must take his title of “Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid” a bit too seriously. He is obviously oblivious to the poll which found that 84 percent of Americans say English should be the official language of government operations. The same poll found that 77 percent of Hispanics agree. </p>

<p>Me thinks that Harry Reid should concentrate on polishing the New Marshall Plan for America he unveiled two years ago.</p>

<p>im politically very liberal and embrace diversity. that being said, when my relatives came over to the US in the early 1900s, they were forced to learn english because no one spoke german, polish, russian, or yiddish. i welcome immigrants into the US with open arms, but i think its not very realistic for them to not be able to assimilate into american culture.</p>

<p>I can’t even fathom a government so oblivious to the needs of its constituents that it needs to invent a problem like this, then spend so much time “debating” it, passing a bill, reacting to it, etc.</p>

<p>To Congress: How about health care you idiots? How about the poor? How about education? How about security? How about fixing New Orleans? How about bringing some of our jobs back? How about enforcing our constitutional rights? How about reparing our world image and regaining our allies? How about getting us the hell out of Iraq???</p>

<p>The slightest attempt at changing health care makes everyone crazy, the poor will always be there, education is doing OK overall, security is being improved all the time (# of attacks since 9/11-0), NO is moving along and coming back to life, the job market is good–the old economy jobs are gone–get used to it, see security–you want to eat your cake and have it too, we picked up Libya, and do what-- unleash even more extremist attacks on the people of Iraq?</p>

<p>Weenie, I just mailed a questionnaire to Senate voicing some of the same things you mentioned. The elites in Washington have no clue - Dem., Rep., it doesn’t matter - they are all the same. They have no clue!</p>

<p>“The President has never supported making English the national language,” said Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez, speaking Friday in Houston, “I don’t see the need to have legislation or a law that says English is going to be the national language.”</p>

<p>Why do Republicans always waffle so much? Can’t they get their message straight? What DO they believe? ;)</p>

<p>I don’t know why the attorney general made that statement. But I did see on television Mr.Bush uttered the words, “English should be our national language”. I think Gonzales should be on the chopping block.</p>

<p>If you look at the history of China, you find that before Mao Tse Tung, Southern Chinese spoke completely different tongue than Northern. And further more, Easterner from Western Chinese. How absurb was that! No wonder China was such a fractured country. I think Mao unified the country in this aspect, and the engine of modernization you see in China today wouldn’t have taken off if people can’t even talk to each other.</p>

<p>In making English the official language, the question is what do we do with people when they speak another language within our borders. The first amendment says “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech”. This is why any such designation to have any teeth would probably have to come through the another amendment.</p>
