Man adopts 42 year old girlfriend

A man accused of running a stop sign and killing 23 year old Scott Patrick Wilson has adopted his long time girlfriend in a move alleged to be all about protecting his assets from a potential wrongful death suit.

I never realized this kind of thing was legal.

So is this a reverse Woody Allen?

I just read this article and all I could think was “what an @ss”.

I’m guessing it’s legal because it never occurred to anyone that they needed to bother to make it illegal.

I hope they can find some way to charge him with incest.

Lol, EPTR! Why wouldn’t someone like him have gobs of insurance that would protect his assets?

He is immoral and so is she. If she had any decency she would not have participated in this farce.
I hope during consideration of his sentencing this move can be considered.

^^^
I second that. I don’t know how they can hold their heads up in public. It is wrong for many reasons but one that really bothers me is that it trivializes the adoption process and makes a mockery of it.

I recall reading somewhere that in California you had to be at least 10 years older than the “child” before you could legally adopt him/her. So if that’s the case, it wouldn’t be legal out here.

Also, I’m no lawyer, but as far as I know, adopted children have exactly the same legal rights and protections as biological children. Thus how could he not be guilty of incest if they have continued to have sex after the adoption?

I didn’t know you could adopt someone over the age of 18.

This is just so, so wrong. I agree, EPTR, about this making a mockery of adoption. Adoption is supposed to be a beautiful thing, not a way to protect your wealth. Disgusting.

ETA: I also hope he is convicted and spends the FULL 30 years in prison. People who kill people while driving drunk deserve life IMO. That’s a whole 'nother issue though.

According to the article, the trust he has set up is already off limits to the plaintiff.

If there is any gripe about this, it would appear to be from his two minor children. Not from anyone else.

Why are journalists so obtuse? Nothing about this action will change whatever award is available to the plaintiffs.

^^^^Then why do this? There must be some perceived benefit which has nothing to do with his “paternal” instincts.

Maybe this is a move designed to provide for the GF, as well as the kids, if he gets hit hard with a damages suit and ends up in prison? Another article talked about how it would ultimately be up to a probate court to decide if the GF/daughter is entitled to a share in the trust so it sounds like none of them benefit in the short term.

sk8rmom has the probably right explanation, IMO.

According to the article, it’s a smart move, financially. I’m realizing now I should have adopted my handyman years ago. I would have saved a bundle.

Classof2015, Lol!

Some states disallow this if there is a sexual relationship- but not Florida.
Why didn’t he just marry her if he wanted to share his assets?

Not Florida!!! That’s shocking!!!

A 23 year old adopted a 42 year old? Is the Daily Beast like the National Enquirer?

“Daddy” is 48.

I wonder since this was apparently legal- what the legality would be if they then decided to marry?

I should divorce my wife. She can keep the house and be the custodial parent for my DS. She can then adopt me and I can live in my old house with my new mother and my new brother.

I need to run the numbers but i think this will give DS a substantial boost in FA.
