manhattan gyms - help!

I’m thinking of giving my daughter, living on east 97th St, a health club membership/gift certificate for Christmas. The 92nd St Y sounds great, though I’m concerned it might be crowded (?) Any help would be appreciated since I live on the other side of the country.

I am not a NYer and there are others who will be better able to give advice. That said, my kid lives in NYC and recently joined Crunch Gym. You can get a membership that allows you to use any location in the city. They also have classes, all included. She got it as a gift as well. It’s been about two months and she seems happy so far.

Isnt that the Y that Paulson recently committed to support financially[ even though they lost $$$ this year that was invested in his hedge fund? ]
the story was in the NYTimes recently.

The 92 Street Y has a preschool that your child must attend if they are on the Ivy tract. The NYT writes about them all the time. Various famous people have been caught doing naughty things to get their kid into this school.

Jack Grubman and 92 St. Y.

soozievt, thanks for the heads up on ‘crunch’ but unfortunately there aren’t any that close to where my daughter lives/works.

the rest of you – I googled paulson/grubman and 92nd St Y. Thanks for an enlightening bit of NYC lore. I laughed. I shook my head: “only in NY.” And I laughed again.

So – any more tips on gyms in NYC?

I used to belong to NY Health & Racket Club when I worked in Lower Manhattan. My employer sponsors memberships at NY Sports Club and Equinox.

My inclination would be to write up a pretty “This certificate good for up to $x in a health club membership” and let her pick out the particular club. There may be other issues she wants to consider. I travel past several closer ones to get to the one I like.

New York Sports Club has branches all over the city, including three on the Upper East Side. Membership can be to one location, or all. There is a LivingSocial right now for a month’s membership for $24, so you could get her a month to try it out, before she commits to a longer membership.

Has she told you what kind of gym she wants to use? Different gyms have different emphases in terms of what stuff they offer; a good gym for one person may not be anywhere close to what some other person wants.

I don’t belong, but have heard good things about Asphalt Green–not exactly a gym, but may be of interest given where she lives. See [Asphalt Green - About Us](http://www.asphaltgreen.org/c-1971-About-Us.aspx) Offers more “stuff” than a regular gym. More like a Family Y.

Here is the link to different kinds of memberships:

http://www.asphaltgreen.org/c-2008-Pool-Fitness-Membership.aspx

Anyway, explore.

She would like a gym that has, at minimum, a fitness center, pilates and yoga; squash would be bonus.

GCmom, thanks for the NY Sports Club idea: the one closest to her even has squash. Definitely something to look into.

jonri, I saw asphaltgreen online - it looks interesting - would it be a hassle to get to if she lives and works off central park?

(I knew I could count on you guys!)
