I just received this response by e-mail from MSM re: the financials: “We plan on releasing the financial aid award notification later today. We had sent a notice to our incoming students that we would send the FA notice within 3 days of the acceptance letter. Sorry for any confusion.” I don’t remember seeing any such notice before, but at least we know the plan now.
Still waiting for financials from MSM for my D (BM Violin Performance).
On another topic, my D received her violin studio assignment from MSM, but we can’t find much information about the teacher. Her current private instructor doesn’t know of the assigned teacher, which is surprising and a bit concerning to us. I don’t know the proper etiquette here, so I’d prefer not to post the assigned teacher’s name right now. Can anyone with first-hand knowledge provide an ordered list of some or all MSM violin teachers in terms of general reputation? Or any thoughts about particular teachers you know about? If it is inappropriate or awkward to post publicly, I would appreciate any useful info via PM.
@IronCitEE I can’t comment specifically on teachers but you could listen to students from the studio to see how their playing “stacks up” to those from other studios. You can ask for names of current and former students and probably find recitals etc on YouTube. Also hearing the professor play can be useful, as people tend to turn out like their mentors with regards to technique and style.
@IronCitEE - pm me im a current student in the precollege i may know something. Lol havent been on this forum in months.
Hi, MSM voice alum here. Do not go to this school for voice. You won’t learn anything. All of the teachers are pretentious old opera singers who had a career 40 years ago and haven’t performed since the 90s. They give us incorrect audition technique. You don’t get acting until your senior year, taught by the least qualified woman I’ve ever met. The worst part, you get one fully staged production the entire four years of undergrad. It WILL be double or triple cast so you will only get one or two performances. This performance will take place in the black box theatre. Meanwhile, sophomores in the musical theatre program have the opportunity to play leads in shows on the brand new main stage, with incredibly high budget sets, costumes, lighting, and orchestra, twice a year, while you’re one single staged performance at msm is in a black box theatre with recycled costumes and minimal set pieces, generally a children’s opera. Go anywhere else. This school was the biggest waste of my time and money and most other alumni feel the same.
The other posts were about violin. I think diversity of opinion is a good thing. I will add mine, which is that MSM is an excellent school, one of my favorites, but the various departments may very well vary in quality.
