On the one hand: “Huh, people are willing to pay 40 million dollars to make a synthetic copy of DNA they could just get from the original microbe. Those people should be paying more taxes.”

^ Key word: productively. The human race hasn’t always proven to be the best bearer of all this power. I do agree that it’s a huge step forward, but ‘with great power comes great responsibility’ and all that…

wait, I don’t get it. Is the cell’s DNA sequence completely made up? Or are the nucleotides not A, T, C, and G anymore? Are the nucleotides synthetic?

Of course the nucleotides are still A,T,C,G. It’s just synthetic though. They say it’s like a “computer”; it’s kinda weird. My guess is it’s like if you lost a leg you can replace it with a synthetic leg.

Well I’m sure it’s useful. I don’t know if this is correct, but it could replace some of the damaged DNA caused by the sun. I’m just taking what I know from basic bio and applying it here, so i’m not 100% sure.
