Marburg virus, a relative of Ebola virus, has caused an outbreak in Rwanda. Experimental vaccines and other treatments have been sent there.
Yes, the Marburg virus is in Rwanda. My kid is actually in that country right now. They have pulled all not mandatory folks from the hospitals…which would be folks like her who are there doing teaching/mentoring/modeling. The program she is with has mandated they not use any public transportation like buses, moto taxis, etc.
They are teaching remotely as far as I know.
Contact tracing continues to be done with those affected being isolated. This virus is similar to Ebola.
Just talked to DD. She is back here. She was teaching remotely anyway. The program director (who was supposed to meet her in Rwanda but smartly didn’t come) agreed she could do that from anywhere.
So she is continuing her work “there” remotely here. Time change means she is working from 3 am to 11 am. But that’s fine.
She says the country and health care workers there are amazing, and are working to deal with this virus.
So keep your fingers crossed that this gets contained.
Apparently, Rwanda has a very decent public health system, so fingers crossed that the outbreak will be contained. Glad your daughter is back here!
An update on the Marburg virus in Rwanda:
The group of doctors my kid was affiliated with have sent folks back to Rwanda, and they think they will actually be teaching and working in the hospitals this week. My kid agrees that the public health and medical responses there were excellent. My kid was also teaching medical students there who she says were very very good. This shines a bright future medically on this country.
Kid is looking forward to going back in 2025.
