I play tuba in symphonic band. I have for the last two years. This will be my third. This is also my first year marching, so I should be marching the sousa. The only problem with this is I’m a 5’ 3" female with very little muscle. I have to use an extra extender to reach my mouthpiece and I’m hardly close enough then. This year, because of my inability, I’ll be marching the baritone, much to my dismay.

Does anyone have any advice on how to “bulk up” and train for next marching season and how to strengthen the muscles needed to march a sousa? I’m not even sure where to start. I don’t do any sports anymore and don’t have much options in the way of equiptment.

tubachick, most of the student posters and parents here (at least that I’m aware of) have concentrated on orchestral and jazz studies, so I’m not sure how much marching specific advice might be available.

Based on what I do know, there are plenty of books, articles on strength, flexibility, yoga and health issues for musicians in general on the internet. Try googling and see what you can come up with. Also, look for marching band type sites/forums. Many high schools with great programs, hostory of competitions have a dedicated site for their band. Often these will have links to associations, private pages, sources of info.

I’d also talk to your band director, maybe your phys ed department head. As for (weight/exercise) equipment, is the school’s accessible for your use? If not your local “Y” usually has lower cost student memberships.

Sorry I couldn’t give you more specific advice. Good luck.
