Marilyn Monroe

Died fifty years ago. :frowning: What is your favorite memory/ film? I love Some like it Hot of course & Bus Stop but most I haven’t seen for a long time.
going to remedy that.

Bizarrely, I can remember the day she died very well. I was staying at the beach with my parents. My father always had the first 2 weeks in August off for vacation. We heard the news on the radio going to eat.

For some reason I’ve always felt a connection to her.

I loved her role in All About Eve.

I was an infant when she died, so no memory. But I loved Some Like it Hot.

I love her in How to Marry a Millionaire, and, of course, Some Like it Hot. My mother always used to say she killed Clark Gable by acting up on the set of The Wild Ones, but she was one of her favorites.

^^^^^^I think I read once that Gable’s wife insinuated the same.

Thanks for starting this thread, emerald! I hoped someone would remember her here. I remember the huge screaming headlines about her death when I was 7 years old.

She was a much, much better actress than she was given credit for being in her time. I enjoy all of her movies but my favorites are The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and Some Like It Hot. It’s not a great movie, but my favorite Monroe performance is probably in The Prince and the Showgirl. IMO she completely steals the entire film from the greatest British actor of the 20th century and it’s fun to watch her do it.

I’m doing a presentation on her life and career at our local library next week. According to the best bio I’ve found (by Donald Spoto), she was indeed blamed by the media for the stress that led to Gable’s death, and she blamed herself when she first heard the news because she had caused many delays on the set. But Gable had a history of doing his own stunts, and the stuntwork on The Misfits was especially demanding. John Huston was having financial problems and pushed the entire cast hard while filming in very hot weather. Monroe may have added some, but was not responsible for all the stress on the set. Gable liked her very much.

Gable’s wife invited Monroe to the christening of the baby she was pregnant with when he died, so it seems unlikely that she blamed Monroe. One thing I’ve learned in doing research on her life is that there are at least 3 versions of any anecdote about her. I’m a fan.

Complex lady.

Ooops - pardon my ignorance. Trying this again -

I like this story about the positive impact Marilyn Monroe had on Ella Fitzgerald’s career.

great thread, emeraldkity!

I do not remember when she died. I napped through most of the '60s. But I loved Gentleman Prefer Blondes.

I enjoyed this humorous piece on Slate by Simon Doonan: [Was Marilyn Monroe fat?: Her secrets revealed. - Slate Magazine](Was Marilyn Monroe fat?: Her secrets revealed.)

I was just reading up on her today. I had no idea that she was an orphan (essentially) and bounced around from home to home. Poor Marilyn. My favorite movie of hers was “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” (I’m a comedy fan!)

I love Elton John’s tribute song to her, too. Makes me feel so sad for her.

I read a piece by the guy who curated the auction of her personal possessions. He noted 3 things. First, her stuff was used, meaning she wore it over and over. Second, nearly all her things were simple, not like you’d expect given her image. Third and perhaps most interesting, they had to make a smaller mannequin because despite her curviness, she was very thin.

In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a couple of guys are staring at Marilyn and Jane Russell. One says to the other: “If the boat were sinking, which of those two girls would you save?” The awed reply: “Those girls couldn’t sink!” :D

I remember when she died. I was 10 and on a cross-country train trip with my grandmother to a family wedding. I don’t know how someone found out but word spread very quickly through the train and I recall my grandmother being very sad. My great aunt, my grandmother’s sister, had met Marilyn on several occasions, as she was a friend and colleague of Arthur Miller. She liked her tremendously and I remember her saying that many people would be very surprised by how intelligent a woman she was, given her screen persona.

Saturday night, there were several specials on about Marilyn and I found that she was even more beautiful, and so charming, in the many interviews they showed, than what you see in her films.

Some Like It Hot is the best by far.

The dress when she sang and in the yacht scene with Tony Curtis made some impression when I first saw the film on television. ;)

Niagara is also pretty good.

I just watched Niagara this weekend - it’s dated now but she and Joseph Cotten were great.

One of my favorite comments about her was from a critic in a review of one of her movies (can’t remember which one now). He said she looked as if she had been carved out of cake by Michelangelo.
