Marine Corps help application?

Does anyone know if having been an officer in the Marine Corps will boost my application?

I will apply to attend law school when I complete my active duty assignment, and I am wondering what kind of a boost my 4 years in the Marines will give me.

Id figure it looks pretty good and trumps and extra curricular out there.

It will help because it means you bring an extra perspective. That said, it’s still all about the numbers.

Four years in the Marines, including active duty assignments, will help tremendously in your law school application, in my opinion, assuming that your GPA from college and LSAT scores are in the range for the law schools to which you apply.

In other words, your experience probably won’t help you if you have an LSAT score below the 25th percentile for a law school, but if you are someone who might have been in the “maybe pile” otherwise, your experience may well put you into the “accept pile”.

By the way, your experience as a Marine will also help tremendously in the recruiting process, assuming again that your grades are in the range (not so low that the law firm recruiting you can’t with a straight face present your qualifications to the recruiting committee).

OConnor17,

Thank you for your service!

Semper Fi Sir, I got out of the Corps a couple years ago and am trying to finish up my bachelors. I will eventually apply to law school and hopefully my Marine Corps experience will help me in my application. I was enlisted got out a Corporal, so the only difference between me and you is that I actually had to work for a living…lol…jp.

Of course it helps!!

I can’t think of any law school that wouldnt give you an extra look.

It helps, but not as much as it ought to IMHO. I had a client with extraordinary military experience who got into schools a notch better than he should have with his numbers, but only one notch. If I were on an admissions committee a few notches higher, I would have taken this kid (and it should surprise no one to learn that he became a superstar at the law school he did attend).
