Marine engineer & bioengineer

I have two passions. I cannot choose either. If I do only one, I will feel my life as unaccomplished.

I want to be a bioengineer, and a marine engineer (shipbuilding & navigation). For that, I am required to attend two entirely different schools. Right now, I am 19, and have not attended college yet.

Is it possible to do both? I feel like getting two bachelor degrees by 28 is kind of…late. I only plan on getting a bachelor’s in marine engineering, and go as far as phD in bioengineering. What do you think? How can I do this?

I feel that it would be silly to do both. Imagine all the debt for those two degrees… and you’d end up in one or the other, not one that needs both. I have yet to hear of a job that would incorporate both of these things.

If you went with your option of the BS in marine engineering, then the PhD in bioengineering, you’d probably only get a bioengineering job. If I were a hiring manager for marine engineers I’d be like, “Huh? Why does he want to come back to this field after a PhD in something entirely different?”

However, if you are still unsure of which one, I would enroll into a MechE program. I could see that this degree could relate to both fields, and if anything, you might need a graduate degree but at least then the decision would be postponed to later. You could try to get internships that would allow you to test both of the fields during this time. It would be a good way to get started, at least.

Also, in what way would you feel “unaccomplished”? If you did a three month internship in one but decided to pursue the other, would you then feel “accomplished”?
