W&M is insanely expensive even for in state. We arent close enough that she could live home. While I enjoy Williamsburg, we are not fans of how the campus is laid out all over Williamsburg.
Getting merit and being affordable donât necessarily go hand in hand.
My son got great merit at Jacksonville U. However, its still an expensive school.
How much in loans is first kid taking out? You said W&M is too much even for instate so trying not to lead you so that your kid falls in love with a school thats going to bankrupt them.
That was my initial point on budgetâŠ.
Op wanted a list of merit schools in the geography and I posted a comprehensive list above. Many will still be a fortune with merit. Others not so muchâŠeven without.
I wonder if OP might qualify for need aid ?
With loans of only up to $27k over 4 years unless the parents co sign, and with grad school and a low paying future role, OP would be wise to use the list to study but really see where the student stands after junior year.
Trade offs - ie location near water - may have to be made to make it work frugally.
And if the students profile - gpa, test, ECs is outstanding - there will be a lot to work with in regards to cost reduction. But that will be known after junior year.
U of Louisiana Lafayette gives in state tuition plus more with the right stats. Would have cost my kid less than 10k/yr
UDel gives merit to OOS and has Marine Science as an undergrad
Washington College in Maryland is on the water and offers 30k in merit aid just for NHS members. You might get more if you have some decent stats. We visited and my daughter liked it a lot. My wife and I also liked it very much. Professors and students seem to have great close knit relationships. Seems like a great school that is not hard to get into.
Itâs a very nice school. Every students does an independent research project. Personally, I love the area, but itâs quite remote for some students.
Another off the beaten path option could be College of the Atlantic.
The schools that I know about are going to be further north than what you asked for. Just in case you want to look a bit further north (and east):
Roger Williams University in Rhode Island, at least back when we were looking, had both good merit award possibilities and a good marine biology program. As someone else mentioned, the University of Maine is another option. I am pretty sure that UNH also has both marine biology and the possibility of merit aid for OOS students.
Even further north and even further east, both Acadia University and Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia have marine biology, and are surprisingly reasonably priced for international students with some possibility of additional merit aid. Acadia is small and is right on the Bay of Fundy. I think that marine biology students there might strictly speaking be a biology major with a marine concentration. Dalhousie in Halifax is medium large with quite a few marine-specific majors, including but definitely not limited to marine biology.
As an FYI, the OP, @MPB2005, hasnât been on the board since May, hasnât posted anything since March, and hasnât posted in this thread since January.
