Marketing Pros - why the soft core porn in Urban Outfitters catalogs?

Glanced through Urban Outfitters latest catalog that arrived at our house last night. Why do they feel they need to use soft core porn to sell clothes to teenaged girls? One full page picture was a lovely naked girl (with leg strategically arranged) pulling on an indescript sock. Is that supposed to make my daughter want to buy…socks? Also topless girls in jeans with a hand over the crucial parts.

Seriously, what is the marketing idea here?

Ask Abercrombie & Fitch. It seems to work. This is the generation that sends naked pictures of themselves via cellphone to their “friends”.

And look at the music videos teens watch…wasn’t Britney Spears naked in one of her most recent videos?

I hate what has happened to Urban Outfitters. I guess I liked them when they weren’t cool.

Thanks for the heads up! Now I will check out the catalog. But I hope they aren’t naked, emaciated girls with that haunted strung out look on their faces.

Weird pictures. Not necessarily haunted, but certainly not Victoria’s Secret. My daughter loves their clothes in the stores, but she’s still a Disney princesses sort of girl.

My DH and I just commented on that last night! My DD likes their catalog, but it seems to be emulating A&F now :(

You have a user name like that and you talk about “moral decay”?? Interesting.

^^ By DonnaL My nomination for Post of the Day.

BigButtz- Having an appreciation for curvy women is one thing. Advertising it in your screen name is simply tacky and creepy.

I am changing my user name to ILIKEBIGSCHLONGS
That would no problem, right? Not impolite or exploitative? I will get right on it.

;)

We may not want to drop it because the judgment of someone who would pick that particular name for a forum dedicated to colleges and the admissions process is seriously in question. Your posts seem acceptable, but I think it’s time to start over with a new name. In case you haven’t noticed, no one else advertises their sexual turn-ons via their screen name.

^^ Go back to the College Life threads.

Midwestmom2kids, LOL!

ILikeBigButtz,
The point is, as soon as I read your first post on this thread, the main thing on my mind was your user name. It detracted from whatever vaild statements you made in your post. I could not take your post seriously (as I now see many others did not as well) once I saw your choice of user name. If you like Big Butts, all the power to you but it is an odd choice of a screenname for a forum such as this. If you want people to take you seriously, another screenname would help. I agree with MidWestMom that it is not that different than using a name like ILIKEBIGSCHLONGS. Your claim that the butt is not a sexual organ is irrelevant as big butts can be a sexual attraction for men.

Yes, “sex sells.” That is true of these advertisements. It also is true of your choice of screenname.

Last year, my D was in a new musical that was about how sex sells and exploits children.

My D’s shop at Urban Outfitters and I don’t recall such explicit ads by them in the past but more by A and F. That’s too bad if their new ads have that. I never think of their store as trying to sell sexy images (not like A and F or Victoria’s Secret) but more about being trendy. I get a ton of catalogues in the mail every day but I didn’t see this one…I will look for it when it comes.

And ILikeBigButtz…think about if you would use an email such as “ILikeBigButtz” at such and such dot com for your college applications or job applications. If not, consider why not.

ILikeBigButtz…I was not aware of the song (likely as I listen to different music than you do given my age). You are claiming that the butt is not a sexual organ. That’s not the point. Yes, both men and women have a butt. If you were to visit any porn site, for example, where they categorize photos and movies, big butts are a category because for some men, a big butt on a woman IS a sexual attraction. I suppose for some women, a man’s butt is an attraction. The point is that saying you love big butts as your screenname has a connotation of infatuation with a body part that DOES have a sexual connotation. Thus, your post on this thread, while valid in many ways, took on a whole DIFFERENT connotation for me and for others apparently, as soon as I saw your screenname.

We are not being immature. I advise if you want adults to take you seriously, that you pick a more appropriate posting name. Perhaps you can take away from these posts that the adults on this thread did not take your postings seriously ONLY due to your choice of name. I asked you if you would use such a name for your email for job applications. Would you? If not, why not?

I hope he’s not using it on his applications to transfer out of community college! (which he is trying to do)

ILikeBigButtz…email addresses are not necessarily ones with your name in them (though that is a distinct possibility). For instance, my personal (not work) email name is SoozieVT@XXXXXX.com. You see, you did NOT pick ILikeBigButtz@XXXXX.com as your email name…for a REASON. It would not be taken seriously by a college or job application.

Nobody is asking you to use your real name on an anonymous forum. But your choice of posting name is going to affect how others read your posts and you should be aware of that if nothing else. Enough adults on this thread came to the same thought about it. I read your post but I was entirely detracted by the name of who wrote it and took it much less seriously. You can ignore this input if you would like. There are adults on this forum, not just students. Your posting name has a connotation to it. I cannot take some of what you say as seriously without being distracted by your name. The content of your posts was fine, but you need to be cognizant that once your posting name showed up with the posts, particularly on THIS topic, your posts lost the level of seriousness they may have otherwise gotten in response. Do with that revelation what you want.

Good luck with your transfer. Also, ignore my advice if you would like (and that of other adults on this thread) but I also advise students who are applying to college. Many of my students changed their email address names from ones they chose originally to use with their friends but would not look serious enough for an application.

I haven’t noticed the latest UO catalog- I think we get them along with anthropologie.
Seems to be same clothes- but anthropologie are about 3x more expensive.
I think the models seem really pale and thin compared to my other catalogs like title nine and athleta ;)

( I admit I didn’t think about my physical preferences in my screen name, but since the board was started to discuss education- that wasn’t a requirement.
If I was on a board that was meant for hookups, I still wouldn’t have put that I appreciate a nice soleus , because there are other qualities that are more important - however if it was a * fetish* board I suppose the descriptive screen name would be helpful- )

Yeah, on his own last year, Son changed his from one that was a reference to his favorite animated movie to a more boring combination of initials and numbers.
