Marketing Pros - why the soft core porn in Urban Outfitters catalogs?

my daughter really likes Jcrew- she likes the colors and the fit but unless they have sales ( which they do) it is out of her price range.
Other things she likes-
American Apparel
the above mentioned Redlight and Buffalo Exchange- ( which have " recycled vintage/modern clothing) she has gotten some brand new looking Banana Republic outfits from Buffalo & high end denim ( the stores in Portland are even less expensive with cooler stuff)
Old Navy has good stuff- but it really doesn’t fit me- it fits her though.

There are also several Plato’s closets in area, which carries young womens recycled fashion- one in Bellevue and one next to Target( where we also shop) in Lynnwood.

Since she has been working at Fred Meyer, she has been buying stuff there-makes it hard to save for her trip ( she liked it better than her job in the Impulse dept at Macy’s) I bought a well made softshell jacket at FM a month about about 80% off and we both wear the energie t-shirts- I don’t see * how* she takes a bigger size, but maybe because she has shoulders? ( she also likes her tshirts looser- it is her* jeans* that are skin tight)

speaking of her trip-I bought her some nylon Columbia pants from Joes( which is one of those * man* stores- hunting & fishing and car stuff) & she actually is going to wear them! REI and other activewear stores have well made stuff and it is durable- & the clothes are actually pretty stylish.
The companies that make ski jackets are also making tees and shorts now.

( and they also have more dignified catalogs)

Plato’s Closet is a god send. My d loves a brand of jeans that are (in my worldview, anyway) horribly expensive. It astounds me how many pairs of jeans that look like they’ve never been worn she’s able to buy there.

She’s a big fan of Delia’s, UO, American Apparel, American Eagle, Lucky, H&M, and Forever 21.

American Apparel – their advertising is straight out soft core porn, and he (the owner) is proud of it, apparently. Rumor has it that he uses his employees in the print ads. I’m glad to say it turns my daughter right off.

Yes, American Apparel has gotten quite a bit of press lately. It’s too bad the guy is such a sleaze-bag because I like their stuff. The above linked article is one of the more favorable ones.

Geez, I had no idea! The AA by us is tiny and has no room for wall decor, and I’ve never gotten a catalog from them.

What a sleezebag! How disappointing, because I love that their stuff is made in America. I live in their wrap dresses
