I think that paying for an hour of a local attorney’s time and passing the info on to them may be your best course of action. Tell them that a clergy person would marry them in the eyes of God, if that is what they believe, but that they don’t have to bring the government into it. It sounds like that would play well with them. Then step back.
Unfortunately, they have probably seen too many sentimental pieces on TV and Facebook about couples marrying even though one has only a short time to live. None of which address the financial ruin that might be involved…
Carachel, you hit the nail on the head. The alcoholism has also made him somewhat paranoid. He ranted and ranted about how he had to give Medicaid his SSN and other personal info…well, bud, you are the one who refused to get medical insurance!
There are other issues re: the fiancee that would open a whole nuther can of worms if they are married and he tries to get benefits. Surprised the ^%$# out of me. Suffice it to say on a public forum that her decisionmaking skills are also somewhat skewed.
Does anyone know what kind of research Medicaid does in evaluating assets, income, etc.?
It’s my understanding that the county or state employees who work on public benefits applications will ask for bank records and other financial records and that they are supposed to reject applications if the applicant refuses to provide the records.
I’m wondering how much forensic work theses agencies do because the two of them can’t possibly be living just on love! Wonder if they will impute an expected contribution on the part of the spouse. It sounds just like college FA apps.
They are showing up to meet me at my dad’s house in two hours and I have been pulling info and putting together the rules and explanations for them (which will also serves as notes for me to guide the conversation). I am sick to my stomach.
Just be firm thT they cannot legally marry,
@CountingDown …yes, I know the type very well. They are often very kind well-meaning individuals who through a variety of poor choices and life situations have ended up completely dependent on the system but to preserve their dignity they attempt to prove they are smarter and better than the system. It is hard to protect them from themselves, sadly.
No doubt your efforts to show him what will happen will fall on deaf ears and you may be alienated. I applaud you for attempting to help. If you an somehow phrase your thoughts into your own little rant against the government and show him how smart he would be to outsmart the system (insert sarcastic grin) you will get further in perhaps convincing him to not marry.
Good luck!
Good luck, @countingdown. I look forward to hearing your report.
