Martha's Vineyard

We are thinking about going for a weekend in October to celebrate our 25 anniversary. Any tips.

It’s beautiful. Stay in Edgartown and don’t miss the Black Dog (especially breakfast or brunch). We’ve stayed at the Winnetu which is pricey, but very nice.

Are you flying? Driving? Taking car ferry or fast ferry?

What do you want to do while there? Dine and shop or drive over sand to see (relatively) unspoiled beaches?

I find having a car on MV to be helpful whereas a weekend on Nantucket or Block Island can be enjoyed w/o a car.

We stayed at the Menemsha Inn in early October. Lovely spot, but unless you have a car, dinner is an issue as local restaurants are closed. We had to take quite a walk ( through woods and a marsh that had us taking off our shoes and wading through a few inches of the rising tide )
I agree with ams5796 about staying in Edgartown…try to avoid Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven . I grew up on the Cape and I have always thought those two places were kind of ugly compared to the rest of the island.

A car would really be helpful on the island. A lot of people bike around Martha’s Vineyard, but I don’t think you’d see enough of the island by bike. It also might be pretty cool in October for biking. Many restaurants close after Labor Day, but not the Black Dog.

Do take a trip up-island. State Road restaurant is wonderful.

We had a place in Katama. You can ride a bike from there into Edgartown. But that basically draws out two choices: you pick a location and generally stay there, either in town or more beach, or you rent a car and drive around. It’s a big island. And it’s changed a lot. Used to be Vineyard Haven was for the winter residents and Islanders tended to be working class but now it’s gone more upscale. Oak Bluffs has this great old Methodist cottage area and was an area African-American were accepted in long ago. And I remember when there were 3 businesses open in Edgartown in the cold: the IGA, a bar and the place which sold tobacco and newspapers. I always loved Chilmark.

If you decide to sit in one area, you need to decide if you want walking around stuff, which suggest Edgartown, or more desolate beachiness, which suggests Menemsha. If you want to drive, you obviously have a lot of options. Me, my favorite thing as a kid was walking along South Beach when the wind was whipping. I gather the beach break to Katama Bay has “healed” for the time being and you can now walk to Chappaquidick again.
