Maryland <=> Caltech ?

Okay im an american/indian dual citizen living outside the country.

i got into caltech but am not going because they gave me crappy aid and am not going to pay 200K for fricking ugrad.

does maryland engineering compare to caltech? hows the recruiting ? i heard they mainly have government recruiters which is potentialy problematic due to my affiliations with India. do the big tech companies interview like dell, hp, samsung et al.

thank you !

In this case, you get what you pay for.

Dell, HP, Samsung do not require engineers…

Maryland is a very strong engineering school, top 25 by most rankings. Not quite as prestigious as Cal Tech, but certainly still a fine school.

The location naturally caters to the government/defense markets. You can look up career info here: [Student Resources @ University Career Center and The President’s Promise](http://www.careercenter.umd.edu/section.cfm?section_id=1)

Thank you for replying !

yes i understand that government plays a big role in the employment. Unfortunately, i can’t work for the government (i think)

But i do hope the big tech companies also interview. Or is the job scene saturated?

i’m doing comp eng. so i thats why i mentioned hardware conglomerates.

I’m comp. eng. at Maryland. Recruiting is pretty good. I’ve seen Dell, IBM, Microsoft, Google, Texas Instruments all on recruit campus. There are a lot of DC startups too that come to campus. I’m a freshman and I have an internship with northrop grumman this summer. That said, UMD isn’t Caltech and doesn’t have anywhere near the name recognition.

If you plan to go on to graduate school, having internship opportunities (which are plentiful in the DC area), great GPA, and recommendations from profs and people you have worked for can get you into a top grad school that DOES have the name recognition, if that’s what is important to you.

okay i feel a lot better now. Its very affordable with the scholarship money and im looking forward to attending ! and yes hopefully i can get into caltech for the phd part.
