<p>Wow, didn’t think about Maryland lacrosse. I imagine the B10 have it, but I don’t think it’s given much attention there like it is in the Midatlantic area.</p>
<p>I read Michigan has added lacrosse. The BIG will have fine lacrosse programs soon. Wrestling is off the charts. I expect Rutgers to add hockey. </p>

<p>Yes to lacrosse, Michigan fields 13 men’s varsity sports including Lacrosse. Well turtle terapin whatever, it will give IU a team to best in the league. The powerhouse colleges in the Big 10 have million(s) of fans…so the Maryland folk better get revved up about football or at least subscribe to Big 10 TV and clean out their RVs to get in the spirit of the Big 10. Maryland is a fine academic institution and will no doubt bolster the Big Ten in that regard but to add to the football roster…that, for me is a stretch…I got Nebraska because of the strong football tradition, Penn State, get that, Rutgers sorta get that as my gut says football will grow at Rutgers with this… but Maryland…I cannot figure out for the life of me what it brings to the brand other than a TV market…but the big question is will the people watch?</p>
<p>For many years the BIG schools with big-time hockey played in other leagues and it was not a problem. Actually most thought it was a problem when they decided to move to a BIG hockey league. UMd can find a lacrosse home until the BIG adds it to the league. I could see RU with it soon. What league is Hopkins in?</p>
<p>I would imagine lacrosse is not too far behind. It really hit the midwest within the last 8 years or so. My S3 gave up football for lacrosse year-round a few years ago and hasn’t looked back. He just took a call from a midwest college coach tonight after an off-season league this fall, although he isn’t planning on playing college varsity lacrosse but will play club. It’s growing quickly so hopefully in a few years Maryland will have some depth and breath in the Big 10 with lacrosse… not sure if it’s spread into Minnesota, Nebraska etc.</p>
<p>Johns Hopkins is in the Centennial Conference (Division III) for all sports but lacrosse (Division I). One of the biggest lacrosse rivalries is JHU vs. MD. That will probably continue unless MD drops lacrosse but the best lacrosse competition is in the ACC. If MD keeps lacrosse, it will be missing out on the most competitive league. </p>
<p>MD’s academics have improved significantly over the past 20 years. I expect its academics and prestige will drop over the next 20 years simply by being part of a mid-west league.</p>
<p>You’ve got to be kidding right?? With Northwestern, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan in the Big 10 you think Maryland is going to be “hurt” academically? Indiana, Michigan State, Minnesota aren’t too shabby either. There are a plethora of academic majors that outrank Maryland for undergraduate and graduate education… last time I looked Maryland hadn’t cracked the top 50 National Universities. All five I listed are ranked higher than Maryland and State, Rutgers, and Minnesota were right in the next group of 25 with Maryland. Now we all know USNWR rankings/smankings but to imply that the Big 10 affiliation will “hurt” Maryland academically is cough, cough.</p>
<p>No, I’m not kidding. My comment is not based on the other schools in the Big 10 because those you have mentioned are pretty good. My point is that MD will become the “step-child” of that league and its image will change for the negative.</p>
<p>Only in football could they be called an underdog, my H tells me they have a pretty good basketball team. Overall, size wise and academically they seem to be a reasonable fit to some of the other Big 10 schools. I’m sure Izzo and the Michigan State team look forward to meeting them on the basketball court as well as Michigan and others in the Big 10. Time will tell.</p>
<p>I think the Big 10 wants to expand to 16 teams eventually. If they pick up another 2 east coast teams, they’ve got a decent core of an eastern division.</p>
<p>20 years? Selective memory. Either that, or seeing the world through scarlet-colored glasses. Over the last 20 years, Michigan’s record against Ohio State has been 8-11-1. Pretty close, I’d say. And in the period immediately before that, Michigan won 6 of 7. The only period of Ohio State dominance during the last 20 years was Tressel’s 7-game winning streak, but we all know now that Tressel ran a dirty program, so take that for what it’s worth. Apart from the Tressel years, Michigan actually dominated most of the last 20 years.</p>
<p>Or maybe it’s conference championships you’re referring to? Well, over the last 20 years Ohio State has won or shared 8 conference championships, 4 outright, 4 shared. Pretty impressive. Over that same period, Michigan won or shared 7 conference championships, 4 outright, 3 shared. Pretty even, I’d say. Wisconsin won 5, 2 outright, 3 shared. Northwestern won 1 outright and shared 2, Iowa shared 2, Penn State won 1 outright, and Michigan State shared 1. The rest of the conference–Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota–were shut out.</p>
<p>Ohio State had a period of great success under the ethically challenged Tressel, and Michigan went through a period of disastrous failure under the hopelessly ill-fitting Rich Rodriguez. It didn’t help Michigan’s cause that these two periods coincided. But that’s all in the past. An honest look at the last 20 years would conclude that these two teams have been on the whole pretty evenly matched and jointly dominant over the rest of the conference, with Wisconsin a strongly credible #3 and other teams mounting only occasional challenges. And with Brady Hoke at the helm at Michigan and Urban Meyer taking over at Ohio State, there’s every reason to believe the dominance of these schools over the rest of the conference will resume its historic trajectory, and their fierce rivalry as gridiron equals will continue.</p>
<p>bc- you are correct. After I posted I looked back over the past 20 years and it was not as lopsided as I recalled. I counted 9 championships though for theOSU did I miscount? Also after Tressel when they were ineligible for the championship I thought they still had the best team. Am I recallling that incorrectly?</p>
