Massacusetts health insurance help

DS and his GF are now working and living in Ma. His job will provide insurance in thirty days and he has a catastrophic policy from CA that i assume will meet the requirement for the first thirty days.
His roommate and GF have jobs that don’t provide insurance. Any recommendations for lower cost insurance that meets the state requirement would be appreciated. I will pass them on and let them take care of the rest.

There is a state plan (MassHealth?), but I think most jobs in MA have to provide insurance. I haven’t researched the issue so somebody might have a better answer, but I got offered insurance working part time retail, and am currently working a part-time job where they pay me as a contractor so that they don’t have to offer me insurance.

ebe, MA has insurance laws and any plan that they purchase needs to meet their requirements of minimum creditable coverage. If it doesn’t meet it then they may have tax penalties which for their age are probably somewhere between 70-100 per month for each of them (depending on how much they make and how old they are) if I am remembering correctly… it’s been awhile… Regardless, they need to be very careful when shopping for a plan on their own because I’d hate to see them pay for something and find out it doesn’t count and get penalized anyway.

I would suggest having them visit the MA Health Connector website or giving a call. They should be able to tell them which plans meet the requirements and how to go about enrolling in them.

https://www.mahealthconnector.org or 1-877-MA-ENROLL

Another helpful website may be the [Foundation for Health Coverage Education](http://www.coverageforall.org). That has information about the Health Connector as well as public programs such as the MassHealth mentioned in the post above. I’d try the Health Connector first.

Great thanks fendergirl. In the case of DS where he has a thirty day waiting period for job insurance how do they handle that? It doesn’t seem they can penalize you for only have catastrophic for those thirty days? Do you know?

You are only can be penalized if you have a gap in coverage of 4 months or more, and even then you are given a 3 month grace period per gap. If you moved to the state during the year, you only start counting from the first day of the month after you move in. If you’ve just moved to the state, you have 3 months to find insurance before being subject to any penalties.

The penalty amount is determined by your age, income level, and marital status. There’s a chart here, about half-way down:

[Assessment of Penalties](http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=dorterminal&L=6&L0=Home&L1=Individuals+and+Families&L2=Personal+Income+Tax&L3=Current+Year+Tax+Information&L4=Guide+to+Personal+Income+Tax&L5=Assessments%2C+Interest+and+Penalties&sid=Ador&b=terminalcontent&f=dor_help_guides_abate_amend_personal_issues_assessment_of_penalties&csid=Ador+Health)

Awesome. Thanks!
