Massive cellphone outage across areas of US

Yep I am cricket - completely down this morning

In case anyone missed it–go to settings and enable wifi calling.

My cricket service is back !!

I never lost service, as far as I could tell—t-mobile HI.

What caused this outage? It was definitely sporadic. I was in the PT waiting room, not connected to wifi, and was able to easily call my husband also an ATT user. The people next to me had no cell signal!

The PT office could not process debit card payments, but the stores less than a quarter of a mile up the road had NO difficulty at all.

White House: FBI, DHS assisting with outage investigation

In today’s White House news conference, John Kirby, the assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs, told reporters that the FBI and Department of Homeland Security were assisting the Federal Communications Commission with its investigation into what caused today’s outage.

Kirby said the FBI and DHS “are working with the tech industry (and) these network providers to see what we can do from a federal perspective to lend (a) hand to their investigative efforts to figure out what happened here.”

Kirby added that there were not yet firm answers as to the outage’s origins.

“Although AT&T provided no official reason for the outage, the issue appears to be related to how cellular services hand off calls from one

network to the next, a process known as peering, according to an industry source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

There’s no indication that Thursday’s outage was the result of a cyberattack or other malicious activity, the industry Source said.”

I call :ox: :poop: on that . I think it was “malicious activity”.

Do they do that transfer all the time? What made this morning different that the system crashed.

Huh, I didn’t have any issues at all. Verizon.

I have ATT and so does DH. Neither of us had any issues. But I was at a PT appointment and the other two people in the waiting room (sitting maybe 3 feet from me) had no service.

Per DH, the explanation of the cause of the outage is completely believable- as Desi Lydic and Troy Iwada said in the Daily Show last night, “ just good old fashioned people sucking at their job.”

I did an online chat with ATT and received a $3 credit! I actually don’t know how long I was without service as I was at an appointment and had my phone on silent and hadn’t checked it. It wasn’t until I was leaving that I saw I had no service; it came back up about 30 minutes later. When I hear about the outage earlier in the morning, I had service, so must not have been without for more than 2 hours.

Interesting thought. We have multiple phones on the account and we’re out for many hours.

I don’t know if those were to blame, but there were some serious solar flares on Thursday evening.

Yes, but… These would have affected all cellular networks.

They offered me $5 at first. I said we have 4 phones (and an iPad) on the account. Finally they offered $20 and I took it.

I thought that there were outages across many more companies. Oh, I just read - the outages were not on the other networks themselves but with connections to AT&T.

I only had my one phone, so I didn’t push.

The solar flares were Thursday night. Wasn’t the outage starting at 3:00 am in the morning…and resolved by the evening?
