That is massive. It sounds like the epicenter was off the coast.

Airport in Santiago is damaged. We have been trying to contact our exchange student from last year who lives in Santiago. No word yet.

Hawaii expected to be hit by 1 or 2 tsunamis at approx. 11:30

Look, I’m not one for 2012, but…

massive hurricane
massive tsunami
mudslides
wildfires
blizzards in MD and Virginia, snow in Georgia and TX (!?)
earthquakes in Haiti and Chile

etc. etc.

jym626 - that would be 11:30 local time or 4:30 eastern time.

rom828 - it might be a while, have patience. prayers to you and yours.

I agree with Applicannot!!! 2012 could be reality after all…scary!

How scary! My daughter spent 5 months in Santiago, Chile a few years ago. Now she is in Istanbul, a city prone to earthquakes, filled with shoddy apartment construction and narrow streets and millions of people. The New York Times had a long, long article a few days ago talking about the Haiti earthquake - but the MAJOR focus was on how bad it’s going to be in Istanbul when the next earthquake there hits. My heart goes out to all those affected by this earthquake, and I’m praying that Istanbul isn’t next… :(

rom828 - hope that you hear news soon.

Just so we don’t get too weirded out, Chile has a history of earthquakes. This is from CNN: “Coastal Chile has a history of deadly earthquakes, according to the USGS. Since 1973, there have been 13 quakes of magnitude 7.0 or higher.” The Earth is quite active in this region.

And a 7.0 quake just off Okinawa today too. Trying to reach friends there now.

To put things in perspective, they say that this earthquake was 900X more intense than the one in Haiti. My mind just doesn’t wrap around that.

Whoa!

The Haiti and today’s Okinawa quake were both 7.0, but Okinawa’s was slightly off shore so probaly didnt do as much damage. The epicenter Chile’s was near the City of Concepcion, about 200 mi from Santiago (where Eliot Yamin was playing a concert-- they’ve been talking to him by phone). But I digress.

I believe the building construction was much better in Chile than Haiti, and wasnt the epicenter of Haiti’s quake right ubder Port-au-prince? Additionally, this article [Haiti Shallow Earthquake Magnified Damage; California’s San Andreas Fault Similar - ABC News](<a href=“Haiti Earthquake: Why So Much Damage? - ABC News”>Haiti Earthquake: Why So Much Damage? - ABC News) explains that the severity of the damage in Haiti was magnified by the fact that the quake was so close to the surface of the earth. All very tragic.

Wow, they had a 9.5 quake in 1960.

depth matters- I hope that we find out more soon.

We are going to get “tsunamis” of about 3-4 feet here in the PNW area according to the local news channel.

Japan reported minor damage so far.

My heart goes out to the people of Chile.

^ Yeah I was reading that too. Its quite amazing how far 3-4 feet takes you in low lying areas. I wonder aloud about the Olympic Skating Oval as it sits in Richmond, a delta below sea level.

Some good news out of all this:

[Huge quake hits Chile, sparks tsunami alert - Americas- msnbc.com](http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35615455/ns/world_news-americas/?gt1=43001)

Is this from the quake off of Okinawa? It can’t already be from the Chile earthquake, can it? They’re not even expecting the tsunami to hit Hawaii till later this afternoon and Japan is much further.

Wouldn’t Australia be hit first?

And aren’t there buoys out in the ocean to measure this stuff?

Sometimes I wish I understood more about geology, etc.

My daughter’s best friend is in Santiago.

I received an email from her this at 11am CT. She is safe. She was alone when the quake hit and very scared. She found other Americans to be with and was able to get an email out to family and friends.
