Massive spike in gpa?

Is a major spike in gpa from the end of freshman to senior viewed as impressive?

I’m a junior on track to have a 4.63(ish)W by the end of junior year, top 5% out of like 600, and like a 3.7(ish)UW
End of freshman had a 3.0W and like a 2.7UW (probably bottom 10% or so lol)
**The numbers above are academic gpa without padding from, things such as PE

Difficulty of classes is all, honors // pre ib // ap - will have taken 5 Aps total by the end of junior year and probably will take another 4 senior year

Wasn’t sure where to post this, but my main question is would this be considered impressive to more selective colleges, or would it look weak since I went and retook a bunch of classes?

Generally it would be better to be consistent all four years, but an upward trend is certainly much, much better than a downward trend. A 3.7 GPA is probably not going to get you into T20 without a hook or spike, but it is plenty good for a lot of selective schools. Your class rank and APs are in line too. Do well on standardized tests, make sure you have some accomplishments in your ECs and you’ll be good to go!

You are likely two weeks into your Junior year at most. I think it is a little early to finalize your grades for this year. Other than that, what @Groundwork2022 said.

It doesn’t look great to retake “a bunch of classes,” but congrats on the big improvement!

Most high schools will not allow you to retake classes, that you have already passed because

  1. They do not have the resources to do this; they cannot put you in a class to boost your GPA at the expense of a student who needs the course and has not has the opportunity to sit for the course.
  2. You cannot receive credit for the same course twice.
