They did decide to open up the Meyerhoff scholarship program. It has been a great program historically for minorities, especially African-Americans, who still predominate in their enrollment.

Congratulations to your daughter! She must be a great student to get this award.

From their website:

Most programs directed to minority students look at remediation and deficits only, on getting students to operate at a minimum level of academic achievement, says UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski. “The Meyerhoff Program offers the nation a different emphasis, one that focuses on highly able African-American students who aspire to become leading research scientists and engineers.”
Total Freshman Enrollment: 45 Students
Average SAT Score: 1309
Gender: 52% men; 48% women
Diversity: 24% Caucasian, 13% Asian American, 61% African American, 2% Hispanic American and Native American. Freshmen came from 8 different states.
100% of the Meyerhoff Scholars live on campus.

D has received the Trustees Scholarship from USD (15k per year for 4 years) and the President’s Scholarship from Portland (12k per year for 4 years).

DD got a Presidental Scholarship from Northeastern University (11K/year) and a Director’s Scholarship at UMass Amherst Isenberg School (along with free tuition there.) Waiting on other offers…

got 7500 from hampshire, got 14,000 from UNiv of jacksonville, got 9600 acdemic , plus 8000 in leadership scholarship from FSU, got almost 20,000 from rollins (and a computer) and got a full tuition 4 year make a difference scholarship form Green Mountain in VT. (this is about 120,000)

i am waiting to hear from them–if you dont mind what are your daughters stats?
i think miami is a bit of a reach for me. i hve a 3.8 and 1330 (1600) 2030 (new score) curious to see what those who have been accepted have. also have tons of good EC and awards in writing, if they look at that I am not sure.
congrats on your daughters acceptance. I visited UM this summer it is a gorgeous campus and I liked it a lot.

My son just received a merit scholarship for full tuition at Lewis & Clark. Also has received $12,000 annual merit award to Willamette and a Regents Scholar merit for $6000 per year at UC Santa Barbara. Finally, he is a finalist for a merit scholarship at Claremont McKenna College. They are flying him down for a three day stay and an interview in early April. This is all very exciting and somewhat unexpected. Congratulations to all.

I have never been so happy to say that it is hard keeping up with such great news about the wonderful acceptances and scholarships that keep coming into the CC family.

For a student that we thought would have a hard time getting into the colleges to which he applied, I have to say we’re thrilled. My S has around a 3.5 GPA 710 V / 720 M / 700 Writing and applied as a Comp Sci major to the following schools:

Northeastern: $16K freshman year, $8K/semester after that (I think they do this because of the Co-op)
Case: $16.700 / year
GMU: $7,500 / year
Syracuse: $6,000 / year Dean’s scholarship with an inference that there would also be a follow-up letter
Drexel: $16K / year

I have to say that all of this is pretty wonderful. Of course, unfortunately, the school that is ‘the lead’ in my son’s mind is currently is not one of the above. If only they would send a scholarship letter, that would be the icing on the cake!

Mine son was notified this week that he is a Genessee Scholarship winner at Univ. of Rochester which is for 1/2 tuition for 4 years. He was a candidate for the full tuition Renaissance which was a long shot, so we are pleased with the 1/2 tuition. Still waiting to hear from his other schools before he makes a final decision. Rochester will also give him an additional $2000 for National Merit.

S received 10K from UCLA (come with the acceptance.) We are from out of state, still have to pay about 30K. Will there be scholarship later to apply?

You need to talk with UCLA’s financial aid office about what to expect for future years & can’t assume the scholarship will be available for other than the specific terms stated in the offer.

Congrats everyone on your kids getting merit awards–great job! Will make paying the balance of tuition & expenses much lighter on the pocketbook!

I got a $6000/year for 4 years Presidential Scholarship (no loans!) from Oregon State, and $1000/year for four years from Xerox as a Nat’l Merit.
Not a lot compared to other schools, but with in-state tuition…even if I end up taking 5 years for an engineering major + minors in Spanish and music, I’ll end up only needing to find about 30k total from other sources. Grad school will be much, much easier this way.
