Master List of Merit Awards

I received a $15,000 Provost Scholarship at Chapman University, the most I was offered. Now just waiting for a good grant that would make the financial officer I spoke to tell me that I would be pleased…

My son has received the following offers:

U of Florida: NMF nearly full ride
U of Maryland: Pres. scholarship, 8K per year, NMF 3K per year, Eng. Dept. scholarship 2K per year, total 13K annually, in-state
U of Miami: 3/4 tuition scholarship
Tulane: DHS, Full tuition plus 3K annually
Cooper Union: Full tuition
Georgia Tech: 0
Carnegie-Mellon: 0

2370 SAT/3.6uw GPA/4.4W GPA

gnusasaurus,
thanks for posting. are cmu’s merit aid awards need based?

congrats to your s - has he decided yet?

I received several scholarships at Miami (ohio). One was $2000 honors program scholarship (might have said already) but the other was quite unexpected- a 10,000 dollar diversity scholarship that made Miami fiscally possible. Along with several smaller ones. :)

condor 30,

I think CMU’s merit scholarships are awarded based on merit only. They don’t award many and obviously ran out of money before they got to my kid.

My son has not decided yet. He was 99% sure on Florida before the Cooper Union acceptance, which he just received today. Now he says he is down to 97% sure on UF.

We are visiting UF again on April 14 and Cooper Union on April 17. So D-Day will be coming soon. ;)

gnusasaurus,

good that he can visit the schools again to help him decide. best of luck to him:)

Are there any Ivy-league like colleges offering merit awards?

gnu , Congrats on the Cooper Union acceptance. Very cool. Way cool.

Well, the world got a little tilted around here today ,too. My D got the Bellingrath at Rhodes College (one of her two long-time favorite southern LAC’s, the other being Centre).

Full-boat. Whole enchilada. Full meal deal. The big-dog.

Tuition and fees, room and board for 4 years. My O My.

(Curmudgeon rushes to start crunching new direct costs numbers , only to realize - they are all zero at Rhodes. That is really going to goof-up my spreadsheet.)

Wow, I’m pretty happy. D is delirious as she just got back from Rhodes last night late . She loved her visit and all the Bellingrath kids, both students and prospects. (And I got to talk to Dave Wottle, Dean of Admissions at Rhodes and my teenage track hero.)

It ain’t over till she says its over, and she says it ain’t over, so on we march to the end.

But I think I’ll take tonight off. ;)

Congratulations!

You sound exactly like my mother did when I got the same deal for Maryland. Though I made it easier on them and enrolled the next day.

Curmudgeon,

For some reason I am not surprised about that Bellingrath. I really empathize with you as your DD makes her decision. That is major money. Congrats to her!!!

I was expecting it , but I knew when I was thinking about Evil Robot and someone mentioned Evil Robot that there was a possibility that she could face the “Evil Robot conundrum”. But isn’t that a situation they want to be in?

Dave Wottle!!! What more is there to decide??? Oh, wait- WE aren’t the ones going to college…

gnu - good luck with the decision - Congrats on Cooper - My D will be class of 2010 at Cooper (art). She’s walking a few feet off the ground these days.

While some think of Cooper as ‘no tuition’, the acceptance letter accurately stated that every student receives a four-year full-tuition scholarship worth $120,000.

A choice between a large Florida uni with the classic ‘college experience’ versus the NYC school with a very small student body is a stark contrast on every level: size, climate, location, etc.

Curmudgeon, a big WAY TO GO for your DD. OMG, what wonderful news!!! I am so very happy for her (and you). Kick back, put your feet up and enjoy your night off. I know she hasn’t made her final decision, but such a fabulous award is such wonderful news. YAY!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MUDGARELLA (yes, I’m shouting)! That is such awesome news - I bet the goats are dancing upside down about now.

Thanks gals, D is home now talking a mile a minute, hopping around, can’t sit still. I am certainly happy she’s chemical free. If not, I’d be worried.

-Jeez, sorry folks. My post #391 was supposed to have a “not” in there. Criminy . I sound like an idiot. “I was expecting it”. Yeah, right. Like anyone can expect THAT. I’ve been around long enough to know that no one can predict the big merit awards. Least of all me.

curmudgeon,
big big big big big congratulations go out to you and your d! yeah!!! :)

Infrequent poster with time to spend on CC this morning, new to this thread, thought I’d add my daughter’s surprise of $25k Presidential Scholarship to NYU honors college. With grants added and loans offered to cover our EFC cash out would be zero, though we can easily afford our EFC. Still waiting on final word from Chicago. No merit of course from Columbia. Berkeley offered 6k in OOS merit with more pending. She loves all four schools. This will be a late April decision. How nice to read everyone else’s good news.

Cur, Wowser! The Bellingrath is fantastic! DS and I visited Rhodes this past summer and were very impressed. Such fun!

HOT NEWS FLASH FOR US: DS just got notified that he won the Hollingsworth scholarship at Furman University. Surprise presentation today by the Dir of Admission from Furman at the high school. The Hollingsworth is $25,000 per year. Added to that is the Palmetto Fellows, SCs lottery scholarship of $6,700 per year which makes Furman about $4,000 shy of the whole enchilada! Woo Hoo! We are doing the monkey dance at our house!
