Master List of Merit Awards

I’m thinking the Perfect Zero beats out the Perfect 800 as a college admissions stat :D.

Congrats to the few who are looking at a zero; the many who are looking at great merit $$. I know that for us, last year, a net $18K after merit award felt like a zero.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy.

Of course, she does have to go there, curmudge. But that’s a minor detail.

Lukester, that dog’ll hunt! Great job by the kiddo! Surprise announcement at the school, huh? Very cool. So, Furman’s the one? What a beautiful place. Good looking, engaged kids. Happy kids.

amatricia, from NYU? The one in New York? LOL. That is astounding. Congrats to your D.

jmmom, I need two more pieces of data -Amherst’s number and Yale’s number. Then I’ll do the math and set it all on a plate before her.

Congrats to everybody on a great merit season. I hope for my D’s sake the need based part of this goes as well.

My D just found out she won a $60,000 Presidential Arts Scholarship at George Washington University. She had to audition for it. We’re very excited!!

Cur:

Have you started sending sending your own “rejection letters” to some colleges on your list?

I wonder what colleges will be the first to get eliminated…

TanCat , We will start that heavy hearted task tonight. Seven will go away immediately. I know it probably won’t free that money up for others but it’s the right thing to do if there is any chance. She didn’t have any stinkers in the bunch, and doesn’t regret any application.

researchmaven – Congrats on your D’s Presidential Arts Scholarship to
GWU. My S received half tuition merit scholarship to GW – also received $7500/ year (renewable each year – don’t know) merit aid to NYU.

s received $8000 from UDel, we arewaiting for Boston College tosend financial aid but they cannot do so until the exhubby sends in the noncustodial parent tax info, which is proving difficult :frowning: poor son is frustrated as this is his dream school, cross your fingers!!

D received chancellor’s scholarship of $12,000 annually to University of Denver. Dept. scholarships of $1,000 are pending. NO FA however - Yikes it is still very expensive!

S just received a full tuition scholarship (over $31,000 per year), guaranteed for 4 years, at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. W&L has a truly outstanding merit scholarship program that offers numerous full-tuition scholarships and even a number of full free rides, as well as many half-tuition scholarships. One great bonus: if the scholarship is merit-based rather than need-based, W&L will lets the student add on any outside scholarships, without reducing the amount given by W&L. (For need-based scholarships, they of course have to follow federal “need” guidelines, but they seem to be as generous as possible.)

We know a number of students who received impressive merit scholarships from several schools, yet W&L’s merit award managed to come in at the top for virtually every student. If you would be happy at a highly selective college that cherishes and enforces its rigorous honor code—and if you appreciate the exceptional quality of life that a well-functioning honor code conveys, as well as outstanding academics—then this scholarship competition is truly worth your while. I wish it were more widely known! (I speak with first-hand knowledge of the terrific academics and robust honor code, because I have close relatives and friends who’ve recently attended W&L.)

And whether or not you win a full-tuition scholarship, you will have the honor of knowing that part of EVERY student’s tuition at W&L is paid for by none other than General George Washington himself. He donated to W&L all the money that the Continental Congress gave him for his service during the Revolutionary War. That sum was invested and provided a solid foundation for the university’s future prosperity.

Any high-achieving student interested in merit awards should definitely apply to W&L. Just be aware that the deadline for W&L’s George Washington Honors Scholarship competition (the umbrella for all of W&L’s honors scholarships) is December 15th.

Don’t know what this means for money yet, but D won a Region-at-Large gold key award from Scholastic Art Awards for her art portfolio.

She proceeds to the national competition and prizes up to $10,000 :)

She previously won a merit commendation in the National Foundation of the Art Awards to the tune of (pinkie to the chin, queue Dr. Evil) ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!!

D received multiple scholarships from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) totaling $18,000 per year, for the next four year.

Woot…

M&SDad…wow, congrats to your D on those scholarships! The MICA one is substantial and I know you were waiting to hear in order to help decide where she would attend. That sure helps!

Your D’s advancement in the Scholastic Art Awards is also quite an achievement.

The NFAA award, though not monetarily of significance, is a widely recognized national award in the arts and is a beneficial achievement for your D in terms of college admissions, resume, and simply personal recognition. My D won one of those and I think it was an accomplishment on a national scale in terms of affirmation, but also was a worthy mark on her resume.

Your D has done very well in her acceptances, merit awards, and other competitions. Bravo to her.

Approximate totals over 4 years (tuition,room/board and fees) Scholarship Name

Just thought I’d update with a full list of the merit awards my daughter has received, or been offered:

Northeastern – $10,000 Excellence Award

Fordham – $7500 Loyola Scholarship + need based grant

UC Santa Cruz – $2000 Merit Award + need based grant

UC Santa Barbara – $1200 scholarship + need based grant

My daughter will be turning down all of the above to attend Barnard, which is meeting full need with a first year grant that is more than all of the merit awards above added together. It’s been an interesting year.

(Hope this doesn’t sound prideful. I know this thread would have helped me pick out choices last year, and I hope future applicants benefit).

Stats: 33 ACT, 4.0 UW GPA, good number of AP courses, Gold Award, volunteer work, stuff with the Japanese language

Purdue University: $18,100 ($14,100 spread over 4 years, $1,000 per semester for 4 semester pre-pharmacy scholarship)

University of Illinois: $16,000 ($4,000 per year for 4 years)

Westminster College in Utah: $44,000 ($11,000 per years for 4 years, ~1/2 tution)

Depaul University: $42,000 ($10,500 per year for four years)

University of Rhode Island: $115,000 (full out of state tuition for 6 years of pre-pharmacy and professional pharmacy education)

Case Western Reserve University: $84,4000 ($20,800 per year for 4 years academic scholarship or about 2/3 tuition, $3,000 per year for four years Creative Achievement Creative Writiong Scholarship *especially surprising because I didn’t attend the portfilo review weekend, which I thought was mandatory)

University of Montana: ~$65,200 ($11,300 per year for 4 years Presidential Leadership Scholarship that increases with tuition, $5,000 per year for 4 years scholarship for university-affililated housing)

Opps…The Montana PLS is $11,030 year, not $11,300.

It’s nice to read about all of these scholarships that you are all getting, it’s encouraging!! Thanks!

Reading Calmom’s last post, I’m contemplating the similarity of our experiences. My daughter was only deeply interested in four schools, and applied to and was accepted by all of them. NYU offered her what we thought was an unbeatable package, and Berkeley offered about all they could for OOS, including a $2000 leadership scholarship that she just received yesterday. But she’s turning them all down for Columbia, which beat them all by meeting full need with a grant–and was her dream school all along, where she would have applied ED if finances had not been an issue. Is this a counter trend? Chicago, curiously, heavily courted her but then offered no aid of any kind.

Edit: I guess i should put total numbers like everyone else
I got…
Kings/Chavez/Parks and Gateway award (60k total)-Ohio University
Buschman Award and Weninger Scholarship(94k total)-Xavier University(OH)
Faculty Distinguished Scholar Award(around 110k total)-Depauw University
Presidents Award and Chemistry Department Award(60k total)- U of Dayton
National Achievement Scholarship(2500)

D applied only to 4 schools she knew she really wanted to go to. All were her #1 choice:
U of Oregon Clarks Honors college: WUE scholarship(~10,500) ; Willamette: $12,000 scholarship, 8400 school grant; Univ. Redlands: Achievement scholar $11,000, Pres, scholar $2500, Univ. Grant $7570; Occidental scholarship $19682.
We only looked at schools where she had a good chance of merit scholarships. Suggestion: Forget the unaffordable dream school approach: find some of the 3400+ other (great) schools that would really suit you and take a closer look at them.
