Master's degree in London- SOAS is only $20k USD per year?

Why are the master’s degrees there so much cheaper? They’re about 50-60 grand here in the US! Check this out:

[Tuition Fees 2010/2011: Postgraduate: SOAS](http://www.soas.ac.uk/registry/fees/postgraduate/)

Is anybody familiar with the UK system and could advise me on my chances with a 3.5 in anthropology coming from a top 10 US university? I’m looking to apply to social anthropology in SOAS (school of oriental and african studies) and possibly LSE and Cambridge.

I would drop them and email if you cannot find entry requirements for US students on their web-site.

Bear in mind the very high cost of living in London which you will need ot be able to afford on top of tuition fees.

UK is raising prices for tuition for the coming year, but it’s still probably a bargain compared to US. Of course, for grad school, nobody pays full freight - teaching assistantships and research assistantships are very common.

I did an undergrad semester at SOAS and I would again just caution you to bear in mind the high cost of living in London. Rent, public transportation, flights back to the US, obtaining a student visa with its limited work allowances, food, even recreation (get used to paying around $12 for a beer) cost.

I think the EXACT OPPOSITE is true in the UK. All foreign students pay full freight in order that the school does not go bankrupt. In fact to get a student visa you have to prove you already have to money to pay for all tuition and living expenses. Saying you will get a job later is not good enough, and they do not offer the “work-study” type of course where you are guarenteed a job in any case. A student visa usually allows you to work up to 20 hours a week. That will usually mean a minimum wage job, which is starvation rations in London.

^ Yes, I meant in the US.

Most UK Masters programs are intensive and 1 year fulltime.
The cost of Undergrad degrees will increase dramatically in 2011/12 not Post-Grad programs.
Since you are looking at a taught Masters there will be no opportunity to offset your fees with teaching/seminar/research work…that is the domain of Doctoral students
London is hideously expensive…Look at Cambridge/Bristol/Oxford/Manchester/…even St Andrews in Scotland.

Your 3.5 GPA is worth an Upper 2:1 on the UK scale which is sufficient for nearly all Masters programs in the UK…the prestige of your US school will count for little in the final analysis.

You will find roughly a third of the class will be UK, one third, EU, and the other third International students.
It certainly makes for a lively and inspiring atmosphere in which to learn.
Good luck
