Master's in Music Technology

Hello Everyone,

I’m Dilip from India. I’m planning to study Master of Music in Music Technology program for spring term 2011. I have studied “Bachelor’s of Technology in Computer science”. Besides B.Tech, I learned DJing, and was involved in Music production activities.

My list of universities include

1- Newyork university - Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development

2- University of oregon

3- UMass Lowell

4- Georgia Southern University

I can’t rely on my chance to get into newyork uni. which is a better option.

Can you please specify which university i should go for?
Have any one of u ppl attended above univ?
Are there any other uni. which offers Music technology Masters program for spring 2011?

Thanks in Advance.

Friends, please reply as soon as you can…

I have only 9 days left to apply them(coz of toefl and international deadlines)

I wish, I know about this website long back…

The confusing definitions that schools use for Music Technology, Audio Arts, Audio Engineering, Sound Production Design, Recording Arts (and others) makes it very difficult to search for programs that may match what you wish to pursue educationally.

It only adds more confusion when some of these are considered either part of the Communication department, Engineering School, or Music School. The schools inside the Music Schools often require a significance performance ability to even apply.

I might add Middle Tennessee State University (near Nashville Tennessee) has a Masters of Fine Arts in Recording Arts which is reputed to very good.

Johns Hopkins has a Masters in Audio Sciences.

University of Miami has a Music Engineering Masters program but requires a Bachelors degree in either Elect Eng or Computer Science.

The other problem you may run into is starting a program in middle of the standard academic year so Fall 2011 may be more realistic. This may not be as difficult for Graduate level degrees, but undergraduate programs often limit such entrances directly into a specific program.

Posts number 542 & 543 http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/6280-suggestions-colleges-music-majors-37.html#post1064321262</a> ask a similar question about graduate studies in this discipline. The two links, to the AES and MEIEA websites have the most comprehensive listings of schools offering this type of discipline. You would have to research further to determine which offer grad degrees and in what focus if you want or need to expand your list.

As prospect60 mentions, the title of the program tends to mean little as the program parameters will vary so much within and between schools. Some are audio science focused, some are production focused. They will require different standards and criteria for admissions, some may well require and audition.

Without researching the admissions parameters at each of the schools you’ve named and being more specific as to your concentration, I doubt you will find anyone here with the depth of knowledge in the discipline to advise you which is best for you.

I would not rush to choose a graduate program without proper research into your needs and desires, and apply only to those programs that will work for what you wish to accomplish.

While focused on the undergrad programs, the thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/957443-music-business-industry-management-technology-production.html</a> and the links within pretty much contain the collective knowledge posted to this forum.

Thank you very much prospect60, violadad.

I’ve been researching them. University of Oregon nd UMass Lowell has the program which is perfect to me. I inquired admissions in them, they don’t require an audition, but to send a portfolio which I’m comfortable for. I just need to take extra courses in Music theory and history to get a conditional admission.
There’s no doubt, University of Oregon is quite reputed than UMass Lowell. The only thing I’m worried for is ‘the location’. University of Oregon is in Eugene(smaller city) nd nearest city is Portland, which is 110 miles away. However UMass Lowell has better location with Boston near by. I’m just little confused to prefer ‘university’ or ‘location’, as location is important to get contacts and internships in the industry.
Regarding Spring term, I couldn’t made it to Fall 2010, and the only option to me is Spring term 2011. I can’t even go for Fall 2011 due to society and visa problems in India.(Visa officer doubts my intention as I’ll be applying after an year, as I’ve completed my Bachelor’s in May 2010.)
I had research on the colleges that violadad posted. Many of them don’t have Spring admission and Master’s program. I believe ‘only the study’ doesn’t help me to get me a job, as this is a music field which requires ‘do it yourself’. So I’m not concerned about so called ‘top colleges’.
I can see mainly two options for me University of Oregon and UMass Lowell. Georgia Southern university is a back-up option for me.

Can you please suggest me to prefer ‘location’ or ‘university’?
Does Conditional admission mean I can satisfy that conditions after i get admitted into university?
Can you tell me about internship opportunities, if you have any idea.
Can you specify which has better music scene Portland or Boston?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. - I know this is a long post, but this is the only resource for me. I haven’t met a person in two years who can guide me in Music education in US, as I live in India.

Hi Dilip,

I have applied for the Music Tech Master’s for the Spring 2011 and I’m currently waiting to hear back from them. This is the only school that I have applied to so I am very anxious (and prayerful!) to hear from them.

This is probably not a relevant post anymore at this point, as I don’t know how this programs approaches mid-year admissions. However, I posted this thread a few days ago, and it may be worth looking into. It is a creative-based MFA program, but offers a strong component of technology as well as plenty of interdisciplinary activity.
