Masters in unrelated major?

I’m a freshman studying computer engineering (for bs degree) right now, but I also want to get a degree in the arts/design. My current college is a polytechnic and known for its engineering so I don’t want to just switch majors, since I do want to go into engineering. However, I also really like design, so I was thinking of going for a masters once I complete this degree. I was wondering if it was possible to get a masters in design even if I don’t have a bachelor’s in it.

Engineering degree programs have breadth requirements; can you take the desired art type of courses as part of your breadth requirements?

It all depends on the kind of design program you are interested in. For example, the Institute of Design at my school, Illinois Tech, has programs that teach human centered design and that do not require an art degree. In fact lots of engineers and other professionals take these kinds of programs. Design does not necessarily equal art.
